Title: Towing Omega automatic

Hi all I have a 3ltr elite for spares and I am going to transplant the gearbox into my 3ltr MV6 I need to tow the elite to my garage but some people have been telling me that if you tow and autoimatic car it can damage the gearbox. sounds odd to me does anybody know if this is correct or am I ok to go ahead and tow it?

Hi not too sure about towing an auto Omega do you not have the handbook to check it up in I do know that some cars have to be lifted to be towed ie a spectical lift . I am pretty sure if it can be towed it will have to be at a slow speed

Damage can be caused by towing an auto.  You have to keep the speed below 50MPH I think and the range is limited as well.  I cannot remember exactly but I think that you can tow it for either 30 or 60 miles.  You could, of course, always disconnect the prop and tie it up somewhere.  If the distance is large, towing the car by rope or rod may not be advisable in any case....

You really want to be disconnecting the propshaft if towing or you will bugger the box.

If its only 2-3 miles it might be ok, but why take the risk?

I think the handbook says 50 miles at 50mph max, but I dont take the risk as its so easy to disconnect propshaft at the diff. Just undo 3 bolts (iirc, you leave the doughnut connected to diff...) apply some leverage to compress the propshaft centre joint enough to get the spider off the centre spigot and then tie the propshaft to the exhaust with a long tie-rap

Thanks for your help guys its only gotta go about 8 miles so may disconnect the prop then as the gearbox is the part i need dont wanna do any damage

8 miles is quite permissable to tow an auto. Just keep an eye on your speed though.

for the 5 mins it takes, disconnect prop. Tow puts extreme stress on box...

Hi, I have checked the handbook and it states, do not tow over 50mph and for not more than 60 miles.
