Title: Random washer Jet Performance!
Post by: richardirv on 21 August 2007, 07:19:23
Hi Chaps, In recent weeks I have been experiencing some strange goings on with my washer jets! It started on a motorway journey, They were working to begin with but then decided to stop competely (on the motorway) headlight washers were still working! I pulled into some services and as I slowed down they started working again! and the same thing happened again once I got back on the motorway etc, I was confused! Anyway after that they have been working ok round town until yesterday when the power of the jets just started getting less and less, it seems intermittent and was wondereing if anyone had any ideas or experienced the same thing, I assume there is a filter or something thats getting blocked!!

Cheers

Rich

Pop the bonnet and pull the pump out of the screen wash tank (it the one on the left, the right hand one is for the lights) whcih is mounted on the bumper.

Then pull out the rubber grommit, it has a filter in prt of it, clean it and flush the washer tank out with clean water whilst its removed.....then see how you get on.

Hi Richard,

you may have a blocked pump or kinked pipe at the front of the radiator - am sure I've had something similar about 4 years ago - am getting on and the memory is starting go. Check the obvious - though I'm probably telling you how to suck eggs :o

Someone had joined my washer pipe with a very small connector, not enough water was passing through to get a good jet..
No not hard to get the filter out.  :y

Well as soon as you have a look at this problem - it'll be one less issue you didn't know how to do on the Omega - one small step.........etc etc :y

LOL, I fixed it!! I put water in!!!

I feel really silly now!! unless there is another problem! not tested on the move yet!!

Its one of those things, I thought there was loads of water in because I had filled it up not long ago!! just assumed there was a problem, Also my washer sensor is faulty so that cant be trusted! comes on when ever it feels like it.

Thanks anyway chaps!! Try not to laugh to hard!

The headlight washers do get through water rather quickly. When mine first started compaining about low fluid level I couldn't believe it given the size of the reservoir.

The headlight washers are on a delay so they only spray for a quick burst when you operate the washers. If you wash the windscreen in one long burst rather than lots of short bursts (IYSWIM) the headlight washers only activate once rather than several times and this saves some water.

They tend to block if the mixture of screenwash is  too rich...  the stuff we have at work for our vans, finds it's way into my Omega...  I tend to just whack it in!  Strong mixture, it ocassionally crystalises when it meets the constriction of the jet and duly blocks..............  Worth running it on near pure water for a resevoir or two..

On cars without h/lamp washers the bottle lasts like aaaaaaggggesss, from one service to another! 7.3 litre capacity isn't it so that's a couple of kettles full! Fill it up and forget about it for a bit.

As said, it does seem to crystalise in the system and clogs the rubber filter a treat. Perhaps the sensor is caked up in yours rich? I'd give it a good wash through.

As a side note, I keep buying those lemon and apple screenwash concentrates from Aldi for about a quid(?) or maybe 69p, but that stuff works the bizz and smells great. But I am ultra geeky  :D

Will get it sorted one day!!

Given that the sensor is alright for a little while, I bet the washer system keeps sludging up. I'd give it all a good blast through (pull the pump & filter out on top of the black tank @ the front) with the hosepipe next time you're in the garden. Then refill it with fresh water/screenwash, and NOT washing up liquid cos I reckon that's the slimey little culprit  ::)

Cheers m8 will have a look at that, think your probably right about the washing up liquid, although I haven't used any, you just never know what previous owners have used!!
