Title: secondary air pump info needed
Post by: johnc46 on 23 August 2007, 17:51:50
Hi my 2.0 16v sounds like a diesel for just over a minute when starting from cold, can anyone tell me if this a faulty pump, valve, or maybe the solenoid. Squeezing the pipe stops the noise.  Is there anything that needs a clean. The noise goes just like something has switched off.  Thanks.

My 2.0 sounded like that, but was down I believe to worn valve gear.   It really did sound like a diesel.

The secondary air pump was more like a squeal (had that too ;)).  Easiest is just to disconnect it.   Its under the front left side bumper.

There's a fair chance you've got a leaking pipe that's causing the extra noise.  The one that goes from the non-return valve up to the flap valve is right in the heatsoak of the exhaust manifold.  Mine was 'holey' just where it turns the sharp corner into the flap valve.  Whatever anyone says about disconnecting it, I'm keeping mine ('cos  i bought a replacement bit of hose before I found out how little it does!).
