Picked up my 2nd 2.5td a few days ago and I've noticed the air con is not that cold. On further investigation I have discovered that the air con belt is missing (might have something to do with it !).
Don't know whether it has broken and just not been replaced or whether there has been a problem. The compressor wheel spins freely with almost zero resistance. Is this correct ?
What is the best method of replacing the belt ?
It's a bit tight but I think there's enough room to get it on from below without removing half the front end. Is this correct or am I being a bit optimistic.
As usual there's probably a "how to" already posted. If so, could someone point me in the right direction ?
Cheers.

hey mate
when i brought my mv6 of the plod's it had a missing belt.
i had BAD news, condenser and pump were brown bread.
if the belts missing it could be (iirc)
-snapped belt-not replaced
-problem with aircon pump itself
-problem with the engauging system
-condenser problem
-hole in sealed system.
if there is a leakage somewhere, the ECU should pick up that there is no pressure and not engauge the pump.
also note that my pump was spinning freely with the belt off, but with the belt on and the pump trying to engauge it made a horid sound!
1st step - get a belt on, and try it.
2nd step (if that fails) - go to quickfit (how ever they spell it) and take advantage of thier deal ' £44.95 to pressure test, fill and check the air con operation' if they can't get the aircon working so the temp at the blowers in the car is 10% cooler than before, you pay nothing!'
Hope it all made sense!
Good Luck

Cheers for that.
If it is a hardware issue, I still have my original 2.5td. I can take the compressor/pump etc off that.
Any idea how I fit the belt, will I get it done from underneath and what do I need to loosen/remove to get it on etc...or will things be obvious once I start the job ?
Good call on the "Kwik-fleece" offer.

On the tensioner between crank and compressor, pop of the plastic cover, then undo 13mm bolt a turn or 2. Should flop down, but if not, 7mm (from memory) allen key will move.
-
Yep..it's a 13mm. I looked at it for a few mins and then noticed the plastic disc. Prised it off...and all was revealed.
Trying to get the belt on is a different story. I took the tensioner off completely and even like that the belt seams to be about an inch too short.
To get it on I'd need to lever it over. Just seems that it would be way too tight. I wouldn't need a tensioner. I've got two belts one Unipart and one from a Belgian manufacturer. Both the same size.
Are they that tight to get on or have I got the wrong belts ?
-
sounds wrong belt, unless you have change crank pulley or a/c pully? the pulleys varied in sized over the years, but belt remained same length.
-
Cheers. I tried a longer belt and that went on easily, a bit to easily I think.
The tensioner is now in its highest position and it's not slipping when running but when I turn on the air con there is no drop in the revs, so I don't think there's a load being put on the belt.
Is there a fuse or something to check b4 I take advantage of the "Kwick-Fleece" Air Con offer that is on at the moment ?

Is the middle bit of the compressor pulley going round?
-
Middle bit ??? Ah..makes sense now !!
I haven't noticed. I'll check on that. If it's not spinning when the A/C is on...where do I go from there ?
-
Aircon gas pressure test....I suspect its empty in which case there will be a leak somewhere.....more often than not its the bottom of the condenser....

From what I gather it's illegal to re-charge a system that has not been pressure tested. So a trip to Kwik-Fleece is in order.
Many thanx for that.
