My 3.0 elite 1997 auto, on reversing early produced a whine/scrapping noise.
Noise reduces to a quite metalic knocking/tick sound on driving forward.
Any thoughts????

Sounds a bit like the Diff to me - am sure others will confirm otherwise.

Are you sure it's from the back, not the auto box?
Yes, sounds like diff, or drive shafts...

I would be inclined to drain the oil from the diff, see what state its in, see if there are metal fines in it, you may find some but how bad. but the ticking could be a drive shaft.

I would be checking brake disc backing plates first.....

I had something similar sounding a long time ago. One of the hand brake spring/pins had come adrift.
Jack the rear up and spin the wheels - see if you can isolate the noise.

Have looked at the post on changing the oil in diff, it suggests that when iffy the diff can be felt to slip and grab when cornering at low speeds.
This is exactly what mine is doing had initally thought it was an autobox problem any othe thoughts?

As said Andy, I would eliminate the rear wheels/disks/handbrake etc first, esp as it looks like you're up against it on the diff.
