Post by: RolandL on 31 August 2007, 17:31:43
:'(  The following error message appears on the mini display on dash  " Headlight Field/vision"  anyone any ideas as to what problem may be ?

No idea really.  Are the headlights (xenons I assume) both working as you'd expect? (dipped/full beam).   Could it be a auto levelling problem?   Have you looked in the car manual? - mines out in the glovebox but I'll go have a look in a bit if it would help.

This is strange, checked lights, all working correctly, and now no message  :-/  looks like I will have to keep an eye on this one

The message means there is a problem with the headlamp auto levelling systen fitted to models with the Xenon lights. They should automatically adjust their height as per the trim level of the car.

Thanks. Now I know the reason for the message, what checks do I need to do to identify the cause ?

If there is a problem with the auto-levelling on the xenons they will should have set themselves to the lowest level to avoid dazzling other drivers. Do they seem a little lower than usual?

It could be that the sensors/linkage that control the levelling on the n/s suspension have come adrift? This seems quite a common problem, but could perhaps be a bulb on its way out. Have a cheeky check and report back.

don't appear to be  :-/

Haynes isn't very helpful in this matter, how do I find/get to this sensor/linkage, what does it look like ?

Have a look on the front nearside lower wishbone.  You may need to take the wheel off but full right lock should suffice.  Have a look where the wishbone is hinged against the chassis leg, about midway front to rear, under where the electrical wires are.  You should see a rod about 2 inches or so long which connects a plastic gubbins about the size of a matchbox to the chassis leg.  If you imagine the suspension moving when you are driving, it reads the relative movement of the parts and adjusts the headlamp aim accordingly to avoid dazzle.

Ensure the rod is firmly fixed and the electrical plug is clean and tight.

There is another similar on, I think, the rear offside suspension arm as well.  Both work in tandem to do the same job.

Found plastic gubbins, rod had come adrift from it. Have pushed it back in, how tight a fit , should it be?

tested lights and they now adjust   :y

I love it when things are straight forward  :y  :y  :y

Glad its sorted.  If the ball and socket joint is worn, it may drop off again, in which case, time for modification or replacement...

Glad to hear you sussed it out.   :y

The socket-on-ball fit should be tight so as to avoid a repeat performance but needs a wee bit of grease to ensure unrestricted movement.  A balance needs to be struck.  You cannot glue it in place as it needs to move with suspension, unfortunately.  Could a clever use of a small narrow tie wrap do the job, pending a replacement from one being broken on here, perchance??   :-/

:( not totally sorted, the rod keeps popping out of its socket. Temp fix with a cable tie, need to source a replacement.  But at least I know what caused the problem, which is half the battle.   :)

elaccy band may work better than cable tie.

ask the breakers on here for one....
