Title: Cruise Control
Post by: Laz on 29 August 2007, 16:41:26
Just bought a 2.2 CD Auto, love the car, however it lacks a Cruise Control.

Is there a possibility of getting one retro-fitted? If so does anyone have an idea of the costs involved?

Where are you - near Brackley or Nottingham?

Is car auto or manual?

Easy peasy. Buy a new indicator/cruise stalk. Fit it yourself, 5 minutes if you take your time and you're really careful. Take it to someone with a Tech2 to programme and you're away. I got mine done by a local chap who charged me about £30 from memory. But there are a couple of members on here who have the capability, one in N'hamptonshire and one in Notts.

 :)

Thats a shame....

Still, brand new cruise stalk £32 + VAT from dealer, then find someone with a real Tech2 to enable it.

Thanks for this, and the prompt response.

Only problem is I can barely fit the key in the lock nevermind fit a new indicator stalk, ok so I need to find a garage with a Tech2 in the Northeast to fit and reprogramme.
I guesse we are talking about couple of hundred quid then? Assuming I can find a garage with a Tech2.

EDIT- After a google it appears not many garages advertise having a Tech2. Any suggestions? I am loathed to go to the main dealer as they charge £50 to say hello.

Seriously changing the stalk is about as easy as inserting a key:

5 screws, 2 clips and one plug.  There is a how to somewhere but one of us can give you lots of step by step help.  Really if you know the right and wrong end of a screwdriver you can do it in 10 minutes

Cheers, may have sourced a garage with Tech2. Will I need a part number for the stalk or is there is only 1 for the 2.2 petrol auto?

Part No. is 9181011 and are just over £30 quid , once you've fitted it just pop down to your local Vx dealer and ask for the workshop manager and tell him you've just fitted cruise control stalk but it's not working and chances are he'll hook up to Tech2 for you and enable it (look surprised!!) and then slip him a few quid for his trouble , anyway that's exactly what I did, so for under £50 i got cruise control as hopefully you will too.
Cheers Pete

Haven't looked at that item, but for the low cost of stalk, and the very high failure rates of older stalks, buy new every time ;)

If you want something done Tech2 wise at a dealer (not that I ever go to one!) ...

Don't say "could you possibly do this on the computer etc.."

I find that if I Talk more technical, eg say Could you spare me 5 minutes to quickly read this system with Tech2... they'll think "he knows his stuff, best not try to rip him off!)"

And, post on here when you have done it. It was the first thing I did on mine and I was walking around with an idiot smile for ages just thinking that I had done something worthwhile on my car.

Give it a go!!!

 :) :) :)

Or you could buy one of my Tech2's from me ;)  (but I'll leave it to you to grapple from M_DTM's hands  :P)  ;D

OK, ordered the part from leavevalleymotors.co.uk, £15+ Vat and £4 postage.

After some calls I found a main dealer that will programme it, Bristol Streey Motors in Sunderland.(First 2 would not programme it if they did not fit the part) They have quoted £46 + vat.

So, cruise control for £70, I'll have some of that.

Is the stalk new? If not, ring them up and cancel, as way too expensive 2nd hand.  2nd hand WILL fail.

£46 + VAT  :o - robbing bastards.  I really should put up my prices....

Absolutely robbing Gits, how the hell do they justify £46 +vat for what is no more than 5 minutes work. >:(

Aye, it was 2nd hand.  >:( He is calling me back with a qoute for a new one.

And getting it programmed, aye £50 is a bit steep, but I am struggling to find a non-main dealer with tech2 in the North-East, plenty of people with Diagnostic Computer but no-one with a Tech2. So I am forced to go to main dealer.

In fairness, it is more than 5mins - you have to plug the Tech2 into TIS to perform this action.  10 mins ;)

It really is worth getting new (approx £30 + VAT from any dealer - you may even be able to do a deal with dealer who is Tech2'ing it ;)).

After a few years, and it seems due to extra weight of the cruise stalk, they wear in such a way that it brings full beam on all the time. Starts just under braking or hard acceleration, but then just becomes random.  I was replacing stalks every 6 months on mine with 2nd hand ones, until I realised how cheap they were brand new....

Had it on the blue one, with the 2.6 it was a bit dodgy when I bought it, so 6 months later I bought a cruise one for under £30 from AutoVaux

I did mine last week. Took me 20 mins tops, and that time included taking the stalk off my Elite(Knackered rear shock mount) to put on my CD. A bit easier for me as the 2.5td has the ECU already enabled for cruise, so no Tech2 req'd.
If you can handle a screw driver...you can do this !

Well, story so far...

Got the 2nd hand one from leavevalleymotors.co.uk, tried to cancel but it was already on its way, so anyway it arrives, I fit it, (You were all right, it was a  piece of cake) Took it to the Vauxhall Dealer who enabled it, however it did not work   >:( turns out leavevalleymotors.co.uk sent me one for a diesel, so I bought a new one from the dealer for £35 and took it home, stripped down the cowling, took out the diesel stalk, opened up the box for the new one, and surprise surprise it was a indicator stalk without cruise control, I'm sure there is a lesson there about checking parts before starting work, anyway. Rebuilt the steering column and took it back, after 5 minute argument with parts department who insisted it was the correct part for my model "IT IS THE RIGHT PART BUT I DONT WANT THAT PART, I WANT THIS PART INSTEAD! I WANT TO GIVE YOU MONEY FOR THIS PART" he eventually conceded and orderded the part in, due on Friday.

So, I have to agree, it would be a piece of cake, but sods law seems to working overtime with this one.

as i hinted at, lea valley are useless, really dont know a thing.  >:(.  and £15 for a 2nd hand stalk is robbery.

2.5td takes 2 wire stalk, all other omegas, 4 wire stalk....

Got the part today, fitted it in about 5 minutes (due to the practice I have had :) ) Works a treat.

Many thanks to everyone on here who helped me fit this excellent mod.
