BUGGER :o has any one had an egr valve come apart on the 2.5 before :question I was on my way to sort out my brake discs (thats another story) and had two problems first of all some woman decided she was going to try to remove my wing mirror with hers >:( apparently she did not realise that the island part of the road calming feature that was on her side of the road meant she was meant to give way to me and tried to come through as I was. luckily they just clipped and no damage done :y Anyway after this off i go again and get behind someone on a Sunday afternoon drive (I know its not Sunday :P) so I decide to pass and boot it no problem, then as I get past drop back to speed limit and notice a strange tone to the engine and slight power loss . No raised temp no eml so carry on sort thr discs out the car is not happy starting but then started and seemed to be a bit rough idling etc on the way home eml flashing on and off but not on constantly just checked and found that the egr seems to have sheared the three bolts that hold its body together which I am assuming is giving me the problem . I have read that the egr can be left disconnected and blanked off is that correct. Until I can find a replacement

that's very common. I have had two go on me.
I'm interested to know how to blank it off and what to do with the electrical connector - if you don't remove it you need to stop it rattling around somehow - I wired mine up (assume a cable tie would melt) but a bit less than ideal.

It looks like a sealed unit to me so there apears to be no way of replacing the screws But it was too hot to do anything with when I got in so I will hold it on using a jubilee clip and pop in to work and see what i can sort out. I will look at where the connector goes and see if it will go anywhere. Will the egr not being connected affect anything onn the ecu I do not want the eml light to be on after its disconnected

Ok, I have blanked the egr valve off by removing the base section held down with the torx bolts. Basically all I have done is cut a plate from a bit of stainless steel,not sure if it was 1.5 or 2mm thick long enough to cover the two exposed holes that were under the base plate as I to get the car going again I have placed this plate under the base and just bolted it back down and it appears to be running ok :y actually it seems to be running a bit better than before :y Only problem is the eml is now on which it was not before will this clear on its own :question

As far as I recall, as long as its blanked and the electrical connection is still in place then no fault light should be displayed? :-?

Whoops meant to ask if it is connected back up will this reset the eml then or is that a tech2 reset only

Usual method is to replace the metal gasket with a piece of sheet without the holes as you have done.
Then replace EGR leaving it connected electrically. I believe replacing electrical connector will remove the light.

Dunno! Plug it back in whilst the valve is blanked and see what happens.... If still lit then may well need a tech2-ing.... :y

Look on the bright side, at least you got TB on your doorstep if needed. Hotel21 is the best part of a days drive from decent Tech2 services.

I will plug it back in tomorrow I left it in my toolbox at work earlier. Production are in on overtime in the morning so I have to go in just in case so I will be getting paid overtime for working on my car as I am replacing front discsetc while I am there ;D As I pointed out to the boss I can not be on call as the car wont be on the road :y

Yes he is about ten min down the road from me, I am thinking about using his services in the not too distant future gearbox climate etc ;D

EGR needs to left plugged in electrically.

Should go out fairly quickly after reconnecting, ie next start...

Right last one on this promise ;) will having the eml on effect the car it seems to be going really well with it on, its just that I thought if the eml is on it resticts the engine to safe mode or does that only happen on certian sensors etc and this is not one of those sensors :-?

Not sure the egr will cause the engine to limp :-/

It certainly does not appear to be ::) Thanks for the advice everyone I was worried I had killed it earlier on this afternoon but thanks again to OOF it will live and not even cost anything to fix even better :y

When EGR is blocked you will get better power, better mileage from fuel..

Good morning all out there :) right I have reconnected the remains of the egr to the connector and the EML has gone out , so yes it does need to be left connected . I have managed to find another good valve (Thank you Henry at las_jacarandas :y) and I will fit this when it arrives I know everyone seems to think its ok to blank them :) but why would it be there if its not needed . Anyway as I said thanks for all the help on this I was really worried something major had happened to the car yesterday afternoon espsecially when it would not start and was running really bad when it did fire up then the eml flashing on/off :o I just hope everyone else can get sorted as easily as I have :y

Its needed for emissions (which aren't checked), so not really required. Does (marginally) improve mpg whilst cruising.

I have just brought a s/h one for £15 delivered so its worth refitting rather than having it cable tied to the air box as it is at the moment ::)

Worth fitting at that sort of money, just so everything is 'right'.
