Title: Newbie here, a project question!
Post by: saintnick on 08 September 2007, 09:06:01
hi all

ive just joined and i have a question about a project.

I have a 98 3.0 V6 elite which you could say is a bit tired in the engine department , the bottom end is knocking there is a water leak from a crack in the block and oil leaking from most places lol.she is an elite tho and the spec as you all know, is awesome, she even has the carin sat nav and original cd changer, cream leather and all the rest

anyway, i also have a 2.5TD with a superb engine and rubbish interior and bodywork.

i would like to have my elite with the diesel engine!!! i have looked around for an elite TD but to no avail and i have done loads of work to the V6 (brakes, suspension, tyres etc) so it would be a shame to give that up. Problem is, the V6 is an auto and the TD is a manual and i want to keep the auto!!  I am lucky to have a VERY good breakers yard and motor factors about 10 minutes away so extra bits is no problem. i realize this is a lot of work and i am doing all the research i can before i start, has anyone done this or know anything that will help me along? i will be taking photos throughout and maybe post at the end if anyone is intrested. any info would be very much appreciated.

Many Thanks In advance.

Nick

You'd be much better keeping the tractor engine where it is and swap everything over from the elite. I think if you do it the other way around you'll be getting your self in a world of frustration and stress. And more than likely the costs would best be spent on an elite TD - you could always recoup the costs breaking the 2 cars and getting the replacement of your choice and condition out of the profits. :y

As you know, Irmcsherkris is attempting the same thing.  The gearbox is overcomable.

The loom is the bit I think he's struggling with at the moment.

Welcome to the site :y

good point i suppose but the TD donor car is in a right state and i know my Elite is in good nick and dont want to risk loosing the pair of them and buying a dog if you see what i mean. and as far as cost is concerend i spent, £200 on the 98 Elite (with blown oil cooler and no MOT) £250 on the 94 TD (with good mileage) and i just looked on autotrader and there is an 99 elite TD for £2950 so even if i spend another £1000 (my current budget) im still getting a cheap Elite TD!

With the TD being drive by wire, you'll need to get the throttle position sensor wired up to engine ECU.  Other issues, the autobox will need reconfiguring to diesel (else it will run the wrong shift pattern, and change up/down too high up the rev range - the TD engine won't like reviing to 6750 rpm!).  Immbolisiers.

Would the gearbox config need to be done by a garage or specialist then? i realize also i will need a flywheel and a diff from an auto TD will this not make the autobox perform as it should? as my elite has the AR35 box .

and thanks again

There is no 'flywheel' for autos.  You will need to source bellhousing and torque convertor from a TD auto.  AR35 is the ideal box for the TD, copes with the torque (unlike AR25).  I thought the diff was the same, but could be wrong - I've never really investigated that.

Now there are some interesting points here - he has a complete TD sitting around with all the electrics and ECUs ect.

Basically everythiny under the bonnet will need to be swapped.

Also pedal box will need the two merging (auto large brake and TD throttle)

I'd say this will take a few weekends totaly off the road.

Failing that fix the V6, bet it is HBV and oil cooler

HBV and oil cooler have been replaced and oil leaks are from head to block joint as is the water leak and bottom end is knocking.

time is not an issue and i have access to more bits and £ if need be. but i could only find one TD elite on autotrader and none anywhere else and it is £2950 and i wont make that selling both the cars i have so im trying to mix and match
