Several past threads have mentioned 2 speed electric Fans related to various Petrol Engined models
Does the same hold true for the TD's (BMW engine) 2 electric fans in front of the Radiator?
If so, what controls the 2 speeds? Are there separate temperature sensitive switches for low & high speeds, where are they located & how can you test them to verify that they are working correctly?
Are there separate fuses protecting the circuits, if so which ones?
At what temperatures should the electric fans cut in?

Yes.
2 sensors (certainly on A/C equipped cars) - one just under top coolant hose on rad, other just above rad drain tap.

I don't have A/C, but will take a look where you suggest & determine if there are 1 or 2 switches
Any idea which fuses or relays (if any) protect/ operate the circuit(s)?
To test, would shorting the 2 terminals on the loom prove that the fans work (ignition on or off?)
I guess that in order to test the actual switches the engine/ rad would have to be extremely hot, especially for the higher speed to cut in. I'm not sure that I want to mess around at those kind of temps!

fuses in engine compartment - see Info section for layout.
The slow speed fan switch if its a 2 pin can be shorted. High speed can also, but needs ign on...
