I know there was talk of a 5 speed auto fitted to the later cars but i have never seen one

Never seen one in the flesh...

I seem to remember reading that they were only ever fitted to a (late) variant of the 2.5TD, possibly only available abroad ...

Funnily enough I was chatting to MDTM about the 5 speed auto last night, He said it was really designed for the 4 pot diesels which rely heavily on turbochargers and hence have all or nothing power bands, the box was designed to try and make use of these engines irratic torque outputs.
The GM designation is 5L40 if you are googling for info.

I can believe that with the DTI models, my dad had a 2.2 DTI Vectra CDX a while back and the power band on that was very narrow, pulled really well low down but didn't like being revved at all. It was a pretty unrefined engine, although it cruised well on the motorway -- you couldn't hear it over the tyre and wind noise, and it was sitting in the power band at 70-80 MPH in 5th.

Like most diesels, max torque is lower down that what petrol drivers are used to, and often takes a bit of getting used to. No diesel is particularly refined, but are great cruisers.
Like most modern smallish diesels, the 2.2DTi is a bit narrow on the power band...

The DTI was particularly bad though. My dad has owned a few diesels over the years, including some with smaller capacities than the Vectra one which still had a better power spread -- for example a Peugeot diesel and a Mondeo 2.0 TDCi. While both still sounded quite agricultural, the Ford engine in particular pulled reasonably well further up the rev range (we're talking 4,000 RPM here, which is high for a diseasel).
I do know how to drive diesels, I just don't enjoy driving them as it's not rewarding shifting up at 3500 RPM when pressing on.

The Diesels I like red line at 1500rpm, except some at 750rmp

Mondeo TDCi is actually a Peugeot developed diesel isn't it, same engine as the X Type 2.0D....... lot's of them failing smog tests at low mileages.

Only the bottom end is common with Ford...the rest is Jaguarised.
