Title: MOT Success but blue smoke when leaving MOT Centre
Post by: nixoro on 12 September 2007, 19:13:24
Car MOT was finally completed today had to have a retest due to high CO levels and that was it had it retested today and it passed but when I started up to leave the test centre I noticed a plume of Blue not good me thinks.

Spent till 10pm last night cleaning all the breather hoses including de-crapping the rear crank breather pipe so I think this helped to clear the CO test.

My question is what to do next would an Oil/Filter change and rear oil seperator change to help reduce the problem or am I wasting my time and just need to change the piston rings or valve stem seals.

The blue smoke looks to only happen on start up and not visible when running if that makes sense.

All Ideas would be much appreciated

Cheers In advance

Roy

Last oil change was about 3months ago and i did top it up abit for the MOT not sure if thats a good thing.

I know the flame trap/oil seperator needs replacing so that will be done hopefully tomorrow if I can get to VX in time.

I have noticed its a little lumpy from time to time and suspect the egr valve is not doing what it should.

Could these be contributing to my problems like bad oil circulation I'm also thinking i'm going to check the oil pressure valve on the front to see if thats weeping.

A few Ideas worth looking at i guess

Any Ideas whether what i'm thinking could be causing my issues.

Valve stem seals sound suspect.

Would suggest a few quick oil/filter changes  2 or 3k miles with a reasonable quality oil.  VX semi synth is a good price on trade club.  Hopefully someone close will have access and can assist.  Having the breathers clean is good.   :y

Lumpy idle with be the Idle Control Valve thats needing cleaned most likely, not the EGR.  Carb cleaner to flush out when removed from engine, couple of drops of 3 in 1 oil to lube thereafter.

The EGR only does its stuff when engine is at motorway cruising mode.  Allows a proportion of the exhaust gas to be re-burnt in the engine instead of fresh air, thus assisting with emmissions.  Again, clean with carb cleaner if you wish but not really required, to be honest.
