Title: V6 Exhaust Blowing
Post by: Stig on 18 September 2007, 21:30:07
Hello all,  I'm  a new boy and also new to owning an Omega.  My V6 Estate (Auto) was making an exhaust blow noise from driver side and this  turned out to be one of the small rubber hoses that connect the EGR pipes to the valve whic had split.   Replaced that and all OK,  back box on the exhaust blowing so replaced,  but now sounds like perhaps a manifold gasket leak on the passenger side up front. Any  experience of this? I heard gasket failures are common on these..thanks Stig

I have a "ticking" noise when cold, then goes when warm on the drivers side. Apparently the passenger side is a pain in the rear to do!
I must admit I aren't looking forward to do mine ::)

Check the EGR valve and "wiggly pipe" are not blowing..

HG are pretty rare on v6...  ...anyone tries to tell you otherwise does not understand the engine...

Thanks for the advice.  Just looked again and the new EGR rubber pipe has split again after 500 miles! What's causing that? Problem with the Cats or the Valve itself? Ta

You have either a blocked cat or centre exhaust section on the drivers side.....

Cheers for the tip.  I had the section replaced as it  was looking dodgy too.  Did  a rattle test on the cats and no noise so honeycombs were ok.  Fortunately they were able to get the centre section joints at the cats undone otherwise I was looking at  hundreds of quid.   Was still noisy though,  and on further investigation the second EGR rubber pipe at the  front right (passenger side) was split too, I've just changed that and it was a really awkward job - now got a sore arm and no skin on knuckles, but at last V6 sounds sweet. Got an emissions test done too and all clear - phew!

Still a bit of a mystery though as to why those rubber hoses split/melt.  I wondered if  it was because I hade replaced one, before the boxes were changed and the other was already split,  so perhaps they have to be changed in pairs? The device they connect to looks as if it does something with vacuum or temperature.  I'm not sure this has fixed it for good - I'll keep a close eye on them... :y

Nothing daft about it at all........the air injection pipework effectively links the two exhaust pipes and with both exhausts free flowing three is no flow of exhaust gases through it. Block an exhaust section up and you get exhaust gases flowing through the air injection assembly and the rubber cant take the heat......and the result is what you have seen......the rubber melts and splits.

Same probs continued - lurching/misfire/lack of power at low speed/secondary intake rubber pipes bursting etc so arranged for hook up and tech tests.  This proved MarksDTM original theory in my first post (see V6 Exhaust Blowing) that the  secondary air injection system pipes were melting and car lurching, because cat(s) were blocked and gasses were coming back into the injection system and bursting those two pipes - drivers side and the one front passenger side just by auxilliary drive belt. Both cats were replaced yesterday and now car is really performing well - no surprise!

Car's had the last laugh though  -got back lat night and driver's door has deadlocked itself - can't see any way of opening  that so it'll prob be  a VX job!

Use the key to unlock it and, although it takes a frightening amount of effort, you ill be able to unlock the door.
