Title: Engine cutting out, problem display and gauges.
Post by: moorej91 on 18 September 2007, 20:54:29
I have a 2.0 cd automatic estate 1999. It keeps cutting out and the display are not working properly, although not all the time. I had aproblem with the engine cutting out before. After getting the code read I was told it was the cam sensor. I had this replaced  together with a new timing belt and pulleys. The problem was much better but not total. That was about 4 months ago but the problem has come back and is cutting out much more often, but  up to now always starts up afterwards.

Any help would be appreciated.

do a paperclip test, though I think yo also need to clean icv, esp if the stalling is at idle...

Hi,

I did the paperclip test before and got a different result from a proper test done by an auto electrician.  Could you tell me what the icv is? Also the engine cuts out while driving not when idling.

Do the paperclip test anyway so that we can help a bit more. Sounds like it maybe the crankshaft sensor.

When I did the paperclip test it came up s the crankshaft sensor, but when I whent to have it fixed the garage did a code read test and they said it was the cam shaft sensor. Would the crankshaft sensor give an intermitent fault and would this affect the display?

Cam and crank sensor common faults on X20XEV engine, usually Cam sensor every 40K, - revs limited to 4K, Crankshaft Sensor can last longer but replace it if it's flashed out the code. These particular sensor problems can be intermittent as well but they will get steadily worse.

The display problem is usually a heat / age problem, ribbon cable contacts break down on the display circuit board, cheap to buy one off eBay (make sure it's the same model) and just get one TheBoy or MarksDTM to get it programed to match your car config if it wasn't out of an identical car.

Also... what's wrong with the gauges? Just possible that if your getting flicking gauges, duff sensor readings etc that your alternator is producing spikes......

ICV is Idle control valve, needs cleaning as TB says if idling sticking high or stalling.

I am having problems with the trip computer screen. Some times the middle row of letters does not come on. Also the fuel gauge and low fuel sensor light are erratic. They can read 1/4 tank one minute and empty the next. I was not sure if the faults with display were syptoms of the car cutting out.

Sound unrelated.  The display, missing pixels, common.  The fuel gauge - check the connections to gauge (A bad earth around here may cause issues, and if fuel pump uses same earth connection, could cause the stalling).

However, clean up icv (Idle Control Valve) first...

Many thanks again for all your help. Will not have time to check until the weekend. Will get back to you with results.

Have not done paperclip test as I have just noticed the eml light is not on. Would I still get a code read if the eml light is not on? Also the auto gearbox seems does not seem to change gear consistantly. Could this be related? Could all my problems be to do with the ecu?

Any help appreciated and thank you.

Should still be stored for a while, but do asap.  It only takes a couple of minutes...
