Title: intermittent poor starter.
Post by: Turk on 01 October 2007, 18:19:20
2.5td '00. Sometimes it starts "right on the button" and other times it'll take about 4-5 seconds of cranking, and sometimes 2 or 3 attempts at that. Battery ok,  it spins the starter motor at heck of a rate. My mate sez it sounds like a machine gun when he's stood outside and it's doing it's in non-firing mode.
I've also had it die on me with symptoms of out of diesel with the "Range" showing 45 miles and once showing 75 miles. Managed to get it going and get to a fuel station as long as I kept the revs up.
I've changed the fuel filter and that did nothing. The slow in starting is usually when the motor is warm. Cold starting is pretty good.

Any ideas me dears ?

When was it last serviced??? fuel filter, air oil etc......
There has been on here a fault where if the fuel drops below 1/4 tank then the engine losses power. This was put down to the fuel pump in the tank itself having become weak in its output.

Sounds like the priming pump that is submerged in the fuel tank is at fault

Any engine management light? Have you paperclip tested it for fault codes?

No, not paperclipped it yet. I'll read the post on how that's done.

Hmm...mine's a '00 2.5td.  Apparently things change after '99 and the codes cannot be flashed up.  Is this correct ?
