Hi,
What are the TD's like?
Are they as quiet and as powerful as the v6 from inside the car?
Also , what would be quicker? , a td that has been chipped or a 3.0 v6?
I mean power all through the rev range.

Hi,
I am new to Omegas but I have tested a few in the past couple of weeks.
The diesel is louder outside but there isn't a lot of difference in cabin noise. The diesel pulls well, but I think the 2.6 V6 auto I tested had the edge as it pulled hard from lower revs.
The 3.0 MV6 I tested pulled nicely and felt like it had more power but I didn't try hard acceleration.

Thanks for the reply. Ive got a 2.5 v6 and think it pulls well , but went in an audi 1.9tdi a while ago that blew me away, had so much pull !
Was just wondering if the 2.5 td would be as good (should be better if itsa bigger engine i would have thought)

Not sure if it would be more powerful. The 2.5 TD is the old BMW engine if I recall correctly....?
I tested a 2.2 TDi facelift.

Yeah, i think it is the old bmw engine.
I wonder if the 2.5td is alot faster than the 2.2dti?

Diesel engines can feel like they've got a lot of pull because their torque output is high from quite low RPM. (indeed, despite being a lot less powerful the 2.5TD has a torque figure somewhere between the 2.5 and 3.0 V6, at a relatively low speed of 2200 RPM)
However, the reality is that, because a diesel engine has such a restricted rev range that torque doesn't translate into blistering performance. You have to really work the gears to stay in that narrow band of torque delivery.
In contrast, any of the V6s has power over quite a wide rev range. Whilst the 2.5 TD apparently responds well to chip tuning I'd be surprised if they are tunable to the extent that they start reeling in any of the V6 models.

The real answer is to test drive / blag rides in a few and make your own mind up. We all want different things from our cars.

Both the diesels do 0-60 in around 11 according to specs I've seen.
V6s are reckoned to do 0-60 in high 7's for a 3.0/3.2 and high 8's for a 2.5/2.6. That's a big difference in performance.

I'd be very surprised but Omegatoy is the man to ask. His TD is reputed to be very quick. ;)
Also worth mentioning that the autobox on the 2.5 TD is a bit weak to handle the standard engine's torque, so really needs to be upgraded before you start chipping (or get a manual instead).

A chipped auto td is not recommended, unless the box has been changed for an AR35. The standard auto box in TD's (AR25) lasts to about 120k miles ish and lets go. Chipping it will only make it fail quicker.
A chipped TD manual, would give the 2.5V6 something to think about.
But we will leave that to MarksDTM and Omegatoy too ermmm 'discuss' ;D

You're not wrong about the need to up-grade an auto-box b4 tuning. I fitted a Tunit system that knocked things up by about 30bhp...and blew 3rd gear.
Mind you, the car had done 130.000 at the time, so it must have been a bit tired anyway.
The extra 30bhp is easily achieved on the 2.5td by chipping or products like the "Tunit" diesel tuning box which I fitted and was doing it's thing in about 15 mins. Certainly makes a difference with better fuel economy too...once you've got used to the grin factor and start driving"normally" again.

I have a 3.0l MV6 V6 and a chipped 2.5TD - both autos.
The TD obviously has potential for big power increases due to being turbo'd. However, The MV6 starts with 90bhp more in the first place.
So, in a nutshell, you'd need to spend a lot of money and do some mad upgrades to get it near a 3.0l V6, assuming you can upgrade that far.
