Title: auto gearbox oil change q's
Post by: Varche on 05 October 2007, 22:41:37
Right I am lined up for a good day on Saturday at maintenance on the car.

Two key jobs - change coolant. Have got my VX red coolant and feel OK about flush and fill procedure from How To.
                    - And change gearbox oil.

A couple of Q's on gearbox filter and oil change.

1. I sent off mail order and got a filter and just the large rear gasket despite asking for both. I would like to have a look in the small front pan and see (for peace of mind) if the thrust washer has disintegrated! However I haven't got a new gasket. Can I carefully re use the old one? Or can I make one out of some stuff recommended by my local parts place. It is Pattex Nural 28 (substitute universal for joints) ? The box actually shows a picture of a gearbox and the blurb says ideal for gearboxes.

2. When I change the main gasket is it recommended to fit it dry or to smear both cleaned metal surface lightly with ordinary grease?

1) M_DTM uses a liquid gasket on sumps.  It has a number (one of the loctite range iirc) but can't remember which.

2) Dry - obviously making sure the surfaces are clean.

My gaskets disintegrated when I took the sumps off, so no chance of reusing.   It was a Loctite product that Mark recommended - a search should find it.    Remember you need to refill the last bit with engine running - astonishing how much more goes in.
