hi guys
have been out this evening and car has been fine untill..................
stopped at a freinds came out and it just turned over but wouldnt fire ...
tryed again holding key for quite a while and it finally fire up ..no sputtering nothing up and running no worries ...
then went into town and parked the car to return and have the same issue again ..
now however it wouldnt start no matter how long i held the key ...
tryed a bump no joy ....
checked fuel was arriving to rail ...yep...
grabbed a plug out of a mates car to check for spark .nothing ....
decided it had to be towed to mates place as town was filling up with drunks ..
on route had to have it in gear with ignition on to get a minimal brake and steer ...
during this time it wouldnt fire and the engine management light was always on ....
im thinking
1. cam sensor ?
2, crank sensor ?
3 dis pack ?
have had to leave the car at a mates a hour away so wondered if anyone else may possible have any other things i need to take tommorow incase any of the 3 items above dont sort it when changed ??
any help would be much appreciated
many thanks alan

Read the fault codes, and check for code 19.
Very likely to be crank sensor...
-
im wondering if that would be doable via paparclip on the obd ??
my next problem is i have no mid .............. :-[
someone has suggested it possibly be the immobiliser ??
has anyone ever had that happen ?if so how did you sort it ?
shall be loading up the vec shortly with a load of bits to go and try n rescue her ...

Paper clip test works fine on the 2.5.....and it will have a code 19!
As a general note.
Crank sensor - essential for good running of the car (some ECU's can just about cope without but, not many)
Cam sensor - It will run and start without problems but runs in limp mode with a 4K limit (note, these dont fail on the V6!)
Dis pack.....worst case would be running on 4 cylindere.....interestingly, on the V6 they still fire up quite happily in this condition.

am i right in thinking the paperclip test displays codes on the mid??
at this time i dont have 1 ................ >:(

much obliged ....thats a great help ..

is there a list of fault codes as a guide please??
also the suggestion of a possible immobiliser issue would a swap ecu work if that was the case??
cheers al

No, you cant swap the ECU's as they need tech 2 to set hem up......and it wont be the ECU anyway (despite what anybody tells you!)
Ignore any immobiliser fault codes for the mo, they often flag as rogues under such failures.
Most of the codes are here:

But, do post up the ones you get.

ok thanks again for your help ... :y
my freind will be home from work around lunchtime so ill get to the car and do the test prior and borrow his comp to add results ...im hoping its a sensor tbh ...
-
If it was the immobiliser signal not reaching engine ecu, the EML would be flashing. I suspect you would have mentioned this, so I'm guessing this is not the case.... ....the immboliser codes never seem to erase themselves, so if you do have one stored (144/145 etc) ignore it for now.
-
ok cool ...
only indication i have had so far is when towing with ignition on and in gear the car wouldnt start at all and the engine light was on constant??
would that suggest crank sensor??
-
All the symptoms sudgest crank sensor.

All the symptoms sudgest crank sensor.
phew i have a spare 1 of them ....
shall let you know how it go`s ..
many thanks alan
-
I would say your symptoms are the classic crank sensor failure.
On newer cars you won't get any fault codes either.
-
ok im confuggled now ...
where excactly is the crank sensor located please??
its not where it thought .lol
-
grr still cant find the crank sensor ....
any quick help would be much appreciated
cheers al
