Ok chaps..Here's an interesting one.
Last week I notice my 2.5 CD had a water leak because coolant was gathering quite a bit on the top of the sump and the plastic engine protector adjacent to it. As you might know from a previous post, I strongly suspected it was the second cheap water pump that had gone kaput and was constantly topping the coolant/water up. Anyway...The mechanic couldn't change it last week and I had to go to Bournemouthe some 150 odd miles away for the weekend. SOOOOOOOOO I plonked some Wynns stuff in the oil, the stuff that "stops leaks and revives seals, gasgets and rubber" etc etc....and in fairness ALSO used some coolant system cleaned. poured in the water bottle reservoir.
The point is this....By the time I got down there there was no more water/coolant leaking out anywhere apart from a VERY small puddle on the left hand side as you look down, sitting on the top of the sump. So before I drove back today I popped to Halfrauds and got another "Wynns Stop Leak" and poured it in with the oil.
Well by the time I got back to Felixstowe EVERYTHING was bone dry, NO sign of water/coolant leakage ANYWHERE.
SO..Why on earth would "stop leak" in the oil effect a water leak OR is it coincidence because she went on such a long and on occasions, rather fast journey.

Why would you put stop leak in the oil if you have a water leak??? :-?

Good point....I got a bit carried away on that score...but on a 10 year old car I thought it wouldn't hurt.
It was the "revitalises seals and gaskets" that sold it to me....just can't see why the water/coolant leak should clear up....before my trip south it required botha morning and evening top up..

You have put coolant additive in the oil??????

If you put coolant additive in the oil deliberately ... I am gobsmacked ....!!! If you did it by accident ... I would have expected a full oil/filter change by now ... if not an oil flush as well !!

:o :o I think that oil and the coolant needs changing immediately (obvious) ..(who knows what problems will bring after)
and if the stopper is effective on the coolant oil cooler must be problematic also (at least checking is necessary)

I am confused after reading this tbh was the additive meant for use in the oil or the coolant? Either way if the coolant was leaking why place an additive in the oil?

You cant revitalise gaskets & seals with an additive!!

HE HE HE HE...No guys...its ok....I NEVER said I put coolant additive in with the oil...
I put the seal/gasket revitalising stuff in with the oil as directed....
and for good measure coolant system cleaner in with the water....again as directed..
AND spookily the water leak has gone away..
My question is : Why would the stuff that went in with the oil APPEAR to have stop the water/collant leaking ...??
And yes...Stop leak does revilalise gaskets and seals etc...I know it does because a) It sais so on the tin ? and b) i've used it in the past on other vehicles and normally it just stops oil leaks but somehow this time it seems to have fixed my water leak also...despite the fact that it went in with the oil..

I think this is just a coincidence. I personally steer clear of potions like this. I would only be tempted to use additives to get me home in an emergency where there was no other option but it would not stay in my engine a minute longer than required.
If the water pump was faulty from new this won't have effected a permanent cure. I would flush out the cooling system, fit a genuine VX water pump and be reassured that it'll last.

If you said you had put Radweld or similar in the coolant I could at least understand why (even if most on here would avoid it)
But I don't follow why you appear to be trying to stop a coolant leak with oil additive?
and coolant cleaner? you'd normally use this before flushing the coolant, not before a long journey - what was the reason for that?
Given that you are happy to add all these potions, why didn't you try the one that at least claims to address the problem you had :-?

Understood....Two separate issues involved to be honest.
The coolant additive was to clean out the coolant system, nothing else. I read on here that some plonk such stuff and leave it in the system for a short while PRIOR to flushing the system out which was due to happen today because I thought the 2nd cheap water pump had gone bad again....
The gasket/seal stuff went in ONLY because I thought it wouldn't hurt on a 10 yr old car....nothing on paper to do with the water leak BUT as I mentioned...for some reason between using both...the water leak has stopped...
I was just asking why it would stop given what I'd used....Just didn't make sence to me.
