Just booked my car in as i desperately need the work doing
this is what its gonna cost
£380 - Cambelt Change and Water Pump Change
£121 - Rocker Gaskets changed and Breather System checked
(did check the above Breathers on Saturday and it looked fairly clean according to LFF64)
total - £501 including VAT, parts and labour
i was wondering if you guys could write me a list of what else they could do while they are doing all this?
is there anything i should tell the mechanic that you guys think they wont do when they should?
(eg: Rocker Gaskets, Breather System, Cambelt etc etc)
if so, im writing it all down and going to speak to the mechanic(s) on the day and NOT to the Receptionist!
(apparently some of you dont trust any mechanics?)
do you know if i will get all this work completed with a "guarantee or warranty"?
im not quite sure these days? aftr all, its a Main VX Dealer
im obviously going to need a coolant change, yet again?
and they must change the spark plugs aswell? (as they are covered in oil from gaskets?)
is it worth me asking them to supply NEW HT Leads also?
i also forgot to tell them that they may aswell do the fan belt aswell
anything i miss?

:o
You should ask on here if anyone can do it cheaper - plenty of people who know more about the Omega here than VX.
-
ok - if anyone can do all the above, let me know :y
i have to get it done "mid-week"
-
us...not trust receptionist, mechanics or Vauxhall ::) :-X
-
Just sat here weighing up what Vauxhall need to do my car
i want to make sure they know all this, ha ha ha
in reference to the Rocker Gaskets that are being done
i take it that i need all of the following
brand new set of HT Leads?
(just ordered some off Ebay, the Bosch ones for £44.99)
6 x Decent Spark Plugs, (already got the Bosch ones all ready)
and all of this (as already detailed by Mark on maintenance guide ;))
Rocker gaskets: 90511451, one set per bank (£25+ Vat retail)
O-rings: 90411826, 8 per bank (13p+ VAT retail)
Gasket, Inlet bridge to head: 90501652, 2 off
Gasket, Inlet to Inlet bridge: 90501653, 3 off
Gasket, Inlet to Plenum O rings: 9118135, 6 off
Sealent, Black (not the Green stuff!): 90485251, 1 off
did i miss anything?

Are those prices Masterfit or Vx dealer prices??
Make sure they're Masterfit prices :y
-
forgot to say, i still havent done my oil change yet!
i asked them to do it and they said £90 so i said "kiss my ass" in a nice way of course >:(
does it matter after all of the above work is done if i leave my oil change until next week?
-
and not to put a spanner in the works...if you ordered the Bosch from ebayer powersparks dont hold out for them arriving in time, they eventually cancelled my order as they were unable to fulfill it after 10days >:(
-
not sure what you mean buddy?
all i know is im taking it to Vauxhall Dealer here in Wallingford Oxford
its called Gurneys
here it is

Thats a vx service price......not masterfit.....make sure your other quotes are masterfit :y
-
damm !!
i did order from them people called POWERSPARKS
shit !
WHAT DO I DO NOW?
if i take my car to have all that work doing, they are gonna change the HT leads and it will cost me a fortune buying from Vauxhall!
ideas?
-
vauxhall or masterfit?
im confused? what do you mean buddy?
whats Masterfit?
are the prices rubbish then? or a bit too cheap or too expensive?
-

Just checked the wesite......they advertise Masterfit......so should give you masterfit prices if you ask for them......if you just phone up and ask for service dept, you will get put thro to vx service desk......you need to ask for masterfit service.
Again make sure you been quoted masterfit prices.......that oil change price certainly isnt.....
-
as far as im aware, at Gurneys in Benson, they do all the work out the back in their huge compound garage area
i thought it was all Vauxhall?
will masterfit prices be MORE expensive?
-
Masterfit prices are cheaper than main Vauxhall. they are still all part of Vauxhall but were set up to work on Vauxhalls that were over 3 years old, and so lowered the prices in order to try and stay competetive with other garages.
So basically you still get Vauxhall parts and mechanics but for less money.
-
As said before, if we can link in, then I can do it for a fraction.... and I mean a fraction... probably 80% cheaper than vx...... but I'm unlikely to be around mid week.
-
vauxhall or masterfit?
im confused? what do you mean buddy?
whats Masterfit?

Masterfit is the vx dealer offers it......which your does....means cheaper prices on certain jobs.....same parts used, same vx monkey doing the job......they do it so owners of older vx cars goto the dealer instead of elsewhere....ie its more affordable.
Oil change and filter change masterfit price should be around....£50-£60 masterfit price......NOT £90
Mind you £50-£60 is still a rip off.......considering.....its costs them around a tenner for the parts....and about 10mins to do.
If you want to do this job yourself......theres some members around with TC cards that can get you 5lts of vx semi and a vx oil filter for around a tenner, incl myself :y
-
Whats the reason for the BIG hurry.....
-
As said on on phone, and on Sunday - your cambelt is overdue by nearly a year, but that quoted price is a bit much. Try other options first, as discussed.
The cambelt MUST have the full kit changed, and a GM V6 Locking/Timing kit MUST be used - it cannot be done properly without. If your mechanic in Horspath needs a locking kit, he can borrow mine - let me know, I can get the kit to Horspath on Friday evening.
-
because i want me car Mark working Mark ::)
im desperate to be able to drive it, and as "The Boy" says, my cambelt is overdue
the rocker gaskets are filled up with oil etc
im gonna phone round tomorrow and get some more Quotes anyway
and another point is, only Vauxhall dealers will have the CORRECT timing belt kit etc
you could always do my rocker covers for me on Sunday if you like?
would pay you handsomely and have heard you are THE BEST! :y

sorry mate
im not even gonna attempt it, way too complex, sorry!

PM sent.

90 Quid for an oil change you have got to be kidding me that is outragous.
Its a 10 min job with most of the 10 mins with your feet up with a cuppa as the oil drains out.
Right Thats it I am going to change my job and just do oil changes for a living 10 oil changes a day and ill be laughing.
after oil and filters ill be in profit by roughly 80quid per change 800 a day thats 4000 a week or 16000 a month or 192000 a year

In for a penny, in for a pound!
That's it i've just registered www.oil-change-derby.com and www.oil-change-watford.com, on that kind of money i will pay GM to bring the Omega back from the dead and start making them again!

Hi Guys
while my car is booked in for all this work, do you think its wise for me to ask them to change the "Fuel Filter" aswell?
as far as im aware, its never been changed since i have owned it. and thats 4 years and 8 months!
is it an Essential job? and how much do these filters cost and what are we looking at "time wise" for Labour?
trouble is, my fuel tank is full, does it have to be EMPTY before you do this?
stop laughing! im not a mechanic, ha ha ha

Fuel filter £12.80+vat if you pay full price.....TC price £5.28+vat
Dunno how much masterfit will charge to fit.........
-
sorry to appear thick chaps
does your fuel tank have to be EMPTY if they change the fuel filter?
mines full at moment! doh!
what does the filter do exactly, improvements ?
-
No, tank does not need to be empty.
If you service your car properly, any servicing should have no effect on it ;)

If you want them to replace the service items ie: Oil filter, air filter, pollen filter, fuel filter etc then opt for the fixed service price for your mileage. Also ask them to do the extra's as well and ask for a bull part figure and they will tell you. The price they qoute is the price you pay, but you must ask them for the masterfit price and nothing else. When I had my car serviced from a masterfit dealer I paid £200 for a major service which included Air filter, oil filter, oil, fuel filter, plugs and a good check round the whole car also they done a fuel system flush cleaned the IACV cleaned all the breathers as well which I thought was a good deal and washed it afterwards.
-
i have done air filter about 2 weeks ago
(K&N Air Filter)
replaced Pollen Filter aswell
am not asking them to do oil change as they want £90 !
will do that myself next week when i fill it with Magnatec
so, all i want is fuel filter doing i suppose
-
.........
! will do that myself next week when i fill it with Magnatec
Just use Vauxhall's semi-synthetic, especially if you have access to some one's Trade Club £8-ish a gallon. Magnatec is just fancy prices for fancy names .......
Ooops is that the start of an oil thread? ;) ;) ;)
-
NO MORE THREADS ON OIL !! HA HA
im getting Magnatec, just "my choice"
-

The Castrol oils are not that good...
-
ALERT ALERT OIL THREAD ALERT ALERT. ;D ;D ;D

Can i ask WHY they arent no good?
is that everyones opinion on here matey? or just your own one?

Castrol seem to have a good name due to massive marketing campaigns in the late 80's/early 90's. The oil is no better than any other similar spec oil. To quote a car designer I know very well, "Castrol? I use that purely to flush the oil"
But it being a not particularly good oil is my personal opinion (as are all my posts/comments), not a view of 'the forum'
-
just got back from Vauxhall and my cars been done and so have i!! >:(
oh well, its only money and my cars all set for a few more years........i hope!
3 MONTHS WARRANTY ON ALL THE LABOUR
12 MONTHS WARRANTY ON ALL PARTS FITTED
just gotta fix a 2 inch piece of rust on the rear passenger door (drivers side)
also fix the plastic trim on the same door, its hanging off, and finally do the check strap on drivers door!
oh, and also the "attenuator" that hopefully TB will help me do :y
heres the bill!!!
£765.88 !!!!!!!! for F***S SAKE !!

!"£$%^& Hell!
-
oh dear oh dear ::) now you know why there often refered to by some as (s)dealers
-
It was either take it there or to some mechanic who im not really sure IF he could have done these jobs
i also met the guy who done the work on my car and luckily he wasnt a spotty teenager who had just left school!
so im glad about that, and i do have piece of mind at least
infact, on speaking with him, it turns out he used to have an Omega aswell, phew!!
THANK CHRIST!!!
-
Jeeze!
Look on the bright side though, you won't have to do it all again for a long time :)
-
ouch:'(
You've got peace of mind though regarding that cambelt :)
-
Thought they quoted you £501?
I notice the theiving bastards have charge full whack for the parts.
Of course, more than willing to assist with the actuator for the climate control :)
-
Ouch, that's an easy £500 profit for VX :(
-
they did quote me £501 TB !
but, i added a few more jobs that i wanted doing, so i kind of expected the "extra" but just not as much as that!!
i suppose i could have bought a new car!! ...........errrrr..........maybe not ey?
beside all that, the car flys now!!
nice and smooth etc
will i have to check the fanbelt in about 1 - 2 weeks?
someone told me that as its a new belt it will be tight and then become looser again, hence it needing tightening up soon?
TB - can i come over in the next couple of weeks? be good to get that "attenuator" sorted please buddy :y
-
.........
will i have to check the fanbelt in about 1 - 2 weeks?

................
No. The 'fan belt' tensioner is an auto tensioner. I don't know whether I'd have cried or what if I'd ever been presented with a bill like that for my car. You should buy some tools & a Haynes & learn how to do it yourself.
-
Andy - im not a man of Great Wealth, had to dip into my savings, im NOT mechanically minded whatsoever, i have a Haynes Manual and to me its like reading Arabic >:(
after spending all that money, i take it the jobs that have been done wont need doing for a very long time
by then i HOPE to own a 3.2 V6 Omega (instead of an Estate)
my point is that these cars cost a lot of money to run, IF you can do the jobs yourself, all well and good i suppose
Laters
-
Andy - im not a man of Great Wealth, .......
You never will if you pay dealers money like that. ;D
my point is that these cars cost a lot of money to run, IF you can do the jobs yourself, all well and good i suppose
but you could have had the job done for much much less.
-
i already shopped around and had even dearer quotes
and you need a special "vauxhall" tool for doing the Cambelt i here?
didnt want to take it to some backstreet mechanic and have hassle trying to get him to honour his work IF anything went wrong
anyway, i just saw this and i want it immediately!! :'(
http://www.exchangeandmart.co.uk/iad/motors/cars_for_sale/vauxhall/omega/object?emcode=8535565&sid=xz3c1I-BNg7007115
-
....and you need a special "vauxhall" tool for doing the Cambelt I hear?
........
You need a cam locking kit & a 30 mm ring spanner, & there are more than enough OOF members that could've lent them to you. I have one some where in the Manchester area! ::) ::) Water under the bridge I suppose - it couldv'e been worse .... it could've been my credit card paying for it! ;D ;D ;D
-
No good crying over spilled milk Andy ;)
Shame you couldn't have waited until the weekend Wayne, seeing as you're only up the road, I was only gonna charge you £60 and a few beers if you supplied the bits (about £150 worth) :-/
I have the locking kit for the cambelt, and I bet I'd do at least as good a job as vauxhall.. I'd have even thrown in an oil change for a tenner or the oil!
Ah well, next time, plan it before it's due.. :y
Either way, at least you can now drive the car without having to worry that you're on borrowed time, I'd recommend getting the absolute most out of it now :)
-
TB - can i come over in the next couple of weeks? be good to get that "attenuator" sorted please buddy :y
Yes, no problem. Let me get my cylinder head swapped over this weekend, then I should be free. If the weather is looking naff, have a word with LFF64 for 'shelter' ;)
-
Hi James
yeah, Patience isnt one of my virtues and Saturday im not at home mate
are you about on Sunday? i need an oil change, but i dont have a Jack or an Axle Stand
theres some beer in it for you and some dosh a roony :y
all i have to do is buy some decent oil
-
I have some oil. Not sure if I have a paper element filter though, would need to check.
-
Wayne,
Don't want to burst your bubble but look out for one thing. VX usually fit the cam cover gaskets dry. This means they do not apply sealant as detailed in the Haynes manual. This can lead to oil leaks in as little as 3000 miles. Every other month, pull out a couple of plug leads and check that no oil is starting to collect in the plugs. Just a hint.
-
I have one some where in the Manchester area! ::) ::)
That will be Old Trafford ;) You did get my PM didn't you?
:y
-
ONG - if you check my receipt from VX you can see that they did use Sealant :y
and IF these Omegas keep leaking at such short mileage span, i will sell the bloody thing as quick as i can!
these cars seem to be plagued with problems and i dont need the aggro of it all!
-

tbh, the cam covers aren't troublesome if fitted correctly - thats why yours lasted 9yrs.
problem lies in mechanics (Vx included) don't know how to do it properly.
-
i guess your right mate, but i do have 12 months parts warranty on all the bits fitted, and also 3 months warranty on ALL labour done, i also met with the mechanic and he wasnt no spotty teenager, i have faith he was an Experienced mechanic, plus he used to own an Omega.........so fingers crossed ey?
IF the rockers go again, i will be back there as fast as you can say "£765!!!!!!!!!!!" >:(
im getting me door trim done tomorrow, another £90 including labour and the new trim
then, its fix the "check strap" as my drivers door wont stay open, and then sort the "attenuator" out,
be nice to have "air con" thats cold and a heater that can be turnt up and down without staying cold!
after all this mere cosmetic stuff is done, im sorted :y
anyone know how much some touch up "champagne gold" paint is for my car?
i have a few bits i want to try and touch up if poss
-
The actuator we need to check. Hopefully just a vac pipe incorrect.
Has anyone got a spare, just in case, save stripping the glovebox out yet again?
For the paint, go to dealer with a TC card ;) - there is more than 1 Champagne Gold, so they match the paint code. For instance, my MV6 is Star Silver (when clean ;D), and there are about 30 different shades of Star Silver. My paint code is Z147, this guarantees a near match (fading etc excluded).
Your paint code is on your VIN sticker on your drivers B post.
-
ok, im a bit dumb as you know
where me "vin" plate?
dont talk in "mechanical" terms to me, as you know i aint got a clue, ha ha ha ha
-
How dare they charge full sting for a spark plug change when doing the camcover gaskets.....plus, why are there two different sealents listed.....
-
I KNOW!
i provided them with 6 spark plugs (Bosch Super Plus4)
and they charged me £48 for fitting the bastards!
-
ok, im a bit dumb as you know
where me "vin" plate?
dont talk in "mechanical" terms to me, as you know i aint got a clue, ha ha ha ha
Sorry, my apologies.
Open drivers door. Look on pillar between drivers door and rear door - the B post - and there is a black sticker. Thats the VIN stick :y
-

Open drivers door....and have a look on the pillar to the left of you......you should see a label with some numbers on it.....paint code is there :y ....thats the 'B' pillar :y
-
TB beat me too it :( ;D
-
Thanks very much :y
i only need a little bit of "touch up" paint, do they come in the pen type dispenser which you can do small bits with?
i think they sell similar in Halfords, or does it come in proper tins of paint?
-
You can get it as a touch up stick and in an aerosol can ;)
-
OK, im booked in at Vauxhall tomorrow, having my "plastic trim" on rear passenger door replaced
i will ask for a touch up stick then
how much do you think this will be?
-
About £3..
-
Had my rear door trim done today at Vauxhall in Kidlington in Oxford, cheaper than i was told (which was nice)
maybe they felt bad after scamming me last week? ha ha ha ha
cost me £85
anyway, i got home and had a letter from Vauxhall in Benson in Oxford
i had asked them to "quote" me for a repair on my drivers door checkstrap, basically my door wont stay open!
TB has seen it, bloody nightmare!
ready for this? £221.39 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
they said i needed all this
PARTS / PANELS REQUIRING REMOVAL
O.S.F DOOR PLATES
SCREWS X 4
O.S.F DOOR CHECK

PARTS / PANELS REQUIRING REPAIR
O.S.F DOOR CHECK
ASSOCIATED WORK REQUIRED
REPAIR O.S.F DOOR CHECK
PARTS / PANELS REQUIRING PAINTING

ha ha ha ha ha
I rang them up and and asked IF they had sent me the WRONG quote, they said NOPE!
BUNCH OF ROBBING BASTARDS!!

i double checked matey
went to the Castrol website and it asks you to input your car details
they said best oil for my car is 0w/30
check it out
go here http://www.castrol.com/castrol/productdetailmin.do?categoryId=9014073&contentId=7027066
then go to bottom left where it says "which oil do i use"
you can then choose Vauxhall Omega 2.5 v6
it states the best oil is 0w/30, and then second is Magnatec 10w/40
so im sure Castrol wouldnt get themselves in trouble by selling me the wrong oil :o

it states the best oil is 0w/30, and then second is Magnatec 10w/40
so im sure Castrol wouldnt get themselves in trouble by selling me the wrong oil :o
I bet every car you enter built in last 15 years it will say the same. Doesn't mean they are right. I certainly would not be using it in mine.
I would strongle recommend to spend the extra money it costs on more regular changes ;)

but im gonna put it in and before i do, im gonna see where i stand IF it ruins me car
be interested to see what Castrol say if i ring their "press office" and ask them "are you sure its OK for my car" !!!
It won't ruin the car. Definately not. Castrol GTX - probably the crappest oil out there - won't ruin it.
As said, that £50 is 4 oil changes using Vx semi (at TC prices), and I can assure you which will be better for your engine!
-
i know what your saying, just wanted to see what its like, next time i will use cheaper stuff if i notice any crap with me car

You will not notice any difference. Possibly the thinner oil may burn or leak easier.
-
£5 ?????????????? >:(
Aaarrgghhhhhhhhhhhhh
all i need doing on my car now is the "checkstrap" and them im a HAPPY bunny! :y
I did buy some oil today, but your all gonna shout at me when i tell you what i paid for it!
all im going to say is "Castrol Edge 0w/30" x 6 litres ::)
and YES its the correct oil coz i checked ;D
Retail is £81 !!!! i paid £55 for cash
Probably too thin. Stick to Vx semi @ £30 for 20l
Agree with TB..... :y
New engines.....thin oil prob ok......old engines stick to the thicker stuff :y
My 2.2 on 105k now likes the semi synth :y
-
i bought the stuff now, and im awaiting a call from Castrol tomorrow
0w/30 is there recommendation, lets see what their press office say
will also speak to some mechanics tomorrow that i know
after all, they SHOULD know what they are talking about, and so should Castrol
my oil gets changed every 5000 miles anyway
i take it that at my next oil change its OK to go back to 10w/40 then?
wasnt sure if you could "mix n match" after you have had a different "viscosity" in ya car?

No disrespect to the above referenced mechanics, but unless they happen to be well educated in the (complex) properties of oil and familar with the chemistry of the particular oil in question, I doubt their opinion would be any more valid than anyone else.
Hardly surprising that Castrol are recommending the oil that costs a fortune is it ;) As discussed on a similar subject yesterday, I think spending the money on more frequent oil and filter changes using good quality semi synth such as the Vx one is the way to go.
Anyway, you pay your money and take your choice, so just personal opinion of course.
-
Hi Guys, i popped in to Vauxhall today to ask a Mechanics poit of view, he said i CAN use 0w-30, but he would always use 10w-40 as all of you said, so......... i am taking it back and getting Magnatec 10w-40 :y
will get some cash back aswell, so nothing lost
i also got this Email from Castrol this morning, this is what it says
Hi Wayne
The website will always recommend the best possible oil for your vehicle
- so the EDGE 0W-30 being fully synthetic would offer the best in
performance and protection - however, if the engine has done a fair few
miles, or burns a bit of oil, using a thin oil would probably not be the
best thing for the engine as it would tend to find any wear and could be
used up faster.
So - if the engine is in good condition, has been well maintained and
doesn't use any oil then the EDGE 0W-30 would be an excellent choice -
but if the engine is a bit tired and needs frequent top ups then a more
viscous product, such as the EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40 ( ignore the Diesel
bit of the name it's fine for petrol ) if you want the performance and
protection of a fully synthetic, or the Magnatec 10W-40 if you prefer a
semi synthetic would probably offer a better solution.
Hope that helps
Kind regards

my reply was this
Hi Andy
thanks for your fast reply
in reference to my car, it has done just under 62000 miles and has had oil changes every 6000 miles, it doesnt burn oil whatsoever, what do you think?
2nd Reply from Castrol
Hi again Wayne
In that case, your engine should be in good order and I think that the
0W-30 would be a very good choice - if the car doesn't like it, it will
soon tell you! usually with some smoke!
If you are really unsure about using the fully synthetic - the Magnatec 10W-40
would also be fine for you.
Kind regards

I think we've seem issues with some oils being more prone to clogging the breathers on short journeys, so keep an eye on that as well. The Vauxhall oil does seem better (but not immune) in this respect.

;D
I love oil adverts! Pure publicity stunts. First car you see is doing a doughnut. Discerning customer, clearly! Probably cares as much for the life of his engine as he does for the life of his tyres.
So, I can sleep easy knowing that if my engine catches fire overnight I can drain the oil and put it in another car, which I can then rev to the limiter with no load for 72 hours. My neighbours are going to love me. ;D
The fact is, it's not possible to tell from the driving seat what your oil is doing so they can claim what they like.

I see from Castrol's website that Castrol's Magnatec is exactly the same spec as Vx's own oil....
-
Am I missing out on an oil thread here? :o
At any rate, as others have said, frequent oil changes are more important than the actual oil or grade - as long as the oil is within spec obviously i.e. 0 or 5 or 10W and 30 or 40, and made by a reputable manufacturer.... but we all know that by now, I gave up on using Mobil-1 and went right back to Vx-own semi 10W-40....
-
Vx oils are supplied by Fuchs and are excellent quality....so why pay more.
-
Incidentally, I noticed in Halfrauds the other day you can now get Mobil 1 in 5L containers :o That's almost (but not quite) enough to do a complete oil change :o
Still silly money though ;D

-
I found that with the mineral oils that Esso Superlube burnt less than Vauxhall. So when my free supply finished I went back to Esso and use less.
I think I used to use 15-40 mineral oil - can't remember this is over 10 years ago.

So the directors of Castrol can run about in top spec BMW's with GTX somewhere in their personalised plates :y ;D Think about it ;)
Theres a Burmah Castrol office not far from where i live......
