Title: hot battery terminal
Post by: paul_cooper on 09 October 2007, 20:55:00
hi,firstly a THANK YOU you to everyone who helped me out. I changed dis pack today running like a dream again.
when i was checking that i had put everything back where it belongs(with engine running), i put my hand on the pos batt terminal and it was really hot, this isnt normal is it ???
the part that was hot is the thick cable running into the timming belt cover then on down to the alternator and starter,i felt the cables at the back of the starter and alternator they wernt hot (the battery terminal is only getting hot with engine running) any ideas anyone please,thanks.....paul

Often a poor connection between the thick wire and the clamp. Measure resistance with a meter between the cable and the clamp.

hi,thanks for that,if this is the case is it just a matter of cleaning the terminal or a case of replacing the wire,thanks....paul

The wire is crimped in the clamp. If this is the cause, its either a new piece of loom with clamp, or replacing clamp with one where you can redo the wire.

It could also be a faulty battery, or simply a naff connection, so you need to check first before buying.

Pull the wire out of the crimp terminal if it's loose. If the wire is still in reasonable condition clean the ends up with a bit of wire wool to remove any discolouration of the copper then buy a battery terminal with screw terminals instead of the crimp. Screw the main wire into the terminal and then clamp the other terminals under the clamp bolt and tighten up.
