Title: Grrr. Dented Omega MV6.
Post by: Nextgen on 08 October 2007, 20:20:41
Hi, some of you might remember me from cavweb :-) ...
My omega has been running superbly recently, with the help of this forum...
But I rear ended, at about 5 MPH, a Ford Fiesta, after I'd dodged someone pulling out from behind a bus. My fault, but the fiesta had a cracked number plate and mine was a mess. Exhaust pipe had gone straight through the grill, punching it in. Insurance have it (I'm waiting on a final call) but the repairers reckon its borderline writeoff. Why? Full front air dam needed, front grille, bonnet and two wings strightened, new washer jet sprayer and a fixed air intake, and fog lights. The air bag didn't even go off - the speed was that low. Is this amount of damage expected, or are they making it up ???
Its my beautiful (though aged) 1998 MV6 estate, the one with *every* factory extra, including the Irmscher springs, front air dam, irmscher rear bumper and spoiler, irmscher side skirts, body coloured wing mirrors and the body painted rub strips on the doors,Irmscher anthracite 17 alloys, nav system etc etc . All were on it from new. Its done 147000 miles and has a rattle from the heat shields around the downpipes, but otherwise sound, had the front shocks replaced with the Bilstein OEM, new idle arm, tie rods (all 3), lower wishbones

I would love to know two things: One - If they make me an offer, how much would you reckon I should accept, and two how much should I hold out for the repairs, and where might I get an independent inspection/quotation for the work?

Any advice greatfully received!

Like most modern cars, frontal impacts on Omegas do tends to damage a lot :(

I think the problem will be getting the Irmscher front bumper and foglight. If you replace them with standard parts it would be so much cheaper and easier.

shop around a bit.  It is difficult to tell but I think that the bumper can be repaired.  As can the other bits of trim.

Shop around, my guess is that it will be a few hundred quid and a lot cheaper than an insurance claim with a hike in premiums that will follow.

:(Not sure of the answer but would be a crying shame to write your motor off.
     Best of luck.

If they do right it off maybe worth thinking about buying it back and using some of the ins. money to get it repaired :-/

If you like the car, then yes most definately.

Tell them not to do the paperwork to write it off until they've approached you, agree a price for it and buy it back from them.

Bonnet and wings look OK to me. Bumpers can be heat welded successfully these days and the rest should be straightforward to source second hand. Worth it for a car you care about.

Thanks people - I do love the car... It does exactly what I want, when I want it. I think they were planning to heat weld the bumper, the problem is going to be the headlight mountings which have sheared sideways, and sourcing the proper grille. I'm not putting bog-standard parts on it (sounds silly, but I love it the way it is, and the way it came out of the factory looks...) If anyone has one...?
The repairers have got the car, I just think they've been looking at the list price for a second hand 3.0 omega to work out if it's a write off...  :-[

Cheers for all the help - I'll let you know how it goes,

Edwin

Heya, they've written it off...! I'm getting the car back, I've not got the time or energy fron the whole damn business to fix it properly.
5 mph collision has ruined my favourite car in the world. And the insurance valuation is a complete joke. But independant valuation doesnt come to anything more.

Make us an offer and you'd be welcome to it if its reasonable: I can send you more photos if you want (but not of the damage yet).
The insurance list was: fix driver side headlight mounts (still works, needs gluing). Straighten bonnet - stays down and latched, just curved upwards. New grille, and plastic weld the air dam. Paint.

Spec: Full black leather, navigation system, (has 1998 maps!), traffic master builtin, phone hands free builtin (CARK-91 nokia kit with adapter for newer phones), cruise control (added), FULL irmscher kit (every dealer option, including springs), dog guard net, Full sound system (6cd changer). Dual climate (works), Full carbon fiber dealer kit (MV6). headlamp protectors !). Air leveling rear suspension - fully working.

New: Bilstein OEM front shocks, brand new Goodyear Eagle F1's on the front, older Goodyear eagle F1's on the rear. Brand new centre tie rod,, outer tie rods and idler arm. Lower wishbones replaced 5k ago. Air con re-gassed and leak checked last year, Cambelt done (iirc 20k ago - under 2 years) with receipts. Original documentation, including network Q-sign over docs and checks, and service schedules up to about 100k. Been fed on Vauxhall oil and coolant.

I also have one of the M-Tec chips for it (not in it at the moment - is a lot of fun though), a spare air box, a few relays and bits and pieces.

The bad bits:
147802 motorway miles. Rear wheel arches have been cleaned, and waxoyl/undersealed on inside - silght rust blisters on surface, and the rear corners of the rear doors have started to go a bit. Scrape on rear driver side bumper (touch up needed) - hasnt got irmsher rear box (theres on on ebay right now!). The heat shields on the downpipes rattle a bit (i've go tseom new clips for them).
Needs a service (was due for one).

Any more questions, Please just ask!
Help me out here,
Thanks
