Title: Possible HBV?
Post by: omegalord on 14 October 2007, 21:43:40
Did a thorough coolant change as the water was a browny colour and when the engin got hot it stunk of hot coolant and sometimes steam from behind plenum.

Now it sits lower on the temp display and does run cooler and havent seen steam since but it still smells strongly of coolant after a good run.

Is it HBV?

If not, Any ideas?

Sounds very much like HBV or one of the hoses around the back. Best to take the plennum off and have a look before it gets worse.
If it is HBV, I recommend a genuine VX part, there seems to be a batch of pattern parts around which last a week if you are lucky >:( can be identified by lack of any moulded-in lettering on the top.

I dont think it will be a hose leaking as when i had the plenum off last time to do the rocker gaskets there was no loose pipes or anything.

Would the HBV make the coolant smell like that then?

It could well be the hbv, but could also be the coolant  drying off the engine as it gets hot. give it a few days and check the coolant tank level for loss.

You can check the HBV by removing the scuttle, you don't have to remove the plenum to check it ;)

Try shining a torch in there and look for brown staining - tell tale of a leak.  Also try with different temp settings and AC on and off.

Hi,

I dont think it will be ther coolant drying off the engine as its smelt like this for ages and still does since ive done the coolant flush. What does the HBV not do that it should when its broke?

Think Matchless may have ment the Coolant Bridge when he said 'Around the Back' as if you find the HBV not leaking that would be your next port of call :y
