Title: Grease/gunge from cambelt top idler
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 15 October 2007, 18:02:24
Noticed on my car that the top cambelt idler has got some greasy/gungy stuff coming out of it. Not loads and loads, but it doesn't look great.

Cambelt kit is about half way through it's life, 20k miles.

Yeah yeah, I know. Change it Asap? ;D

Change it as soon as possible!

Serioiusly, if it's losing the lubrication from a moving mechanical part then it won't be long before there's a failure!

Not uncommon to see a little bit round there.

The obvious question - why have you got the cambelt cover off again?

I've noticed that some cambelt followers and tensioners are just well packed with grease, in use some squidges out.

But you can only see by removing cam cover, so my original Q remains. Why remove cam cover?

Like I say, it was worrying me. I've done 5,000 miles since we last looked at it, wanted to check again.

I'm just going to have to put a kit on there, me thinks.

I thought it was a fairly new kit on there?

Is there any play/wear in the pulleys...

Kit's done 20k

Can't really feel for wear, as the belt is on...

So it should be fine at least until next summer, depending on your mileage
