Had this problem on `98 CDX 2.0. Secondary air pump was drawing excess current so pulled fuse under bonnet. No more flickering lights. :y :y

sounds like the alternater is struggling from the intial load from starting bud

I agree. Could be an alternator not keeping up with the high loads just after startup. Check the aux belt is not slipping and is in good condition, and measure the battery voltage just after startup and see if you can see any fluctuation. It should gradually rise over the first minute or so. At a fast idle you should see at least 14 volts once it's stabilised. There is a howto on here detailing alternator disgnosis which talks about a connection to the regulator that's prone to corroding and becoming intermittent. That'd be worth a look if the drive to the alternator looks OK.

Also, check that the battery terminals are not getting hot. Frequently the wire from the alternator / starter to the positive terminal becomes loose where it is crimped into the terminal, resulting in a hot terminal and dodgy charging / starting. Check it's firmly crimped and not loose. Best to sort it now before the weather gets colder.
