Title: new owner - oil cooler??
Post by: bjmdjuk on 19 October 2007, 21:34:47
i have just purchased an omega 2.5gls on a 1996 plate i have one or two issues i would like help with.
the first thing i noticed was a nasty smell in the car when i put the heater on its ok when heating not on but heh its starting to get cold out there so i'm gonna need it. the second thin is that i just had a look in the header tank and it is full of sludge dip stick is clear and oil filler cap clean !
it runns well doesn't miss a beat no smoke and very smooth it is in excellent condition in and out and only cost me £700
just wanted to know have i brought a heap of problems or is it a good deal
my last vauxhall was a frontera 2.4
the one before that was a 2.0 gsi cav but it was stolen and do i miss it
any help and advice would be much appreciated thanks

Sounds like the oil cooler has gone. Easy fix and there is a 'How to' on here as well so you should be ok. I am sure someone else on here will be along shortly to and say the same.

Possible Oil Cooler problem. If it was just brown stuff possibly burnt coolant . The problem might be related to HBV Valve which controls the heating actually. Sopmeone will be along shortly with more experience in this.

Really cannot remember where I got this piccy from but it may assist in your diagnosis......

Certainly pointing towards oil cooler but you need to follow the flow.....

I certainly would not recommend driving the car meantime - brown crap does not make a good coolant....   :'(

As all seems to be running ok, does it use any water or oil.
if it is oil cooler it has to use one of them :question
if not drain it down and give it a good flushing, some peeps on here recommend wynes.
or use a water miscable degreaser, run up to temp a few times and flush out a few times.
not forgetting the antifreeze 50/50 mix.

which reminds me mine has none at the mo. having done exactly as described above for the same reasons as you give, mine has been under test since hence no antifreeze since January. But solved the problem.

thanks  for the advice guys i will flush the system and remove the header tank i think i will need to spoon it out of there as to it using oil or water i am not sure as i have only had it for 3 days so i am unable to judge that i gave up being a mechanic over 6 years ago when everything started getting to complicated ie: diagnostics etc i was brought up old school when you were a mechanic not a fitter or technician
the last real job i did on a car was to change the engine on my frontara 2.4 a job i would not recomend to anyone !!
but it now looks like i have to get my tools out of retirment

but my burning question is did i get a good deal even with the faults?

I hope you dont take offence but £700 for a 1996 gls is a bit pricey IMO.

Never mind one with oilcooler problems.

But.... the true value is in how much YOU like it. I love my omega. I have a new zafira and would still prefer to drive the omega. So for me the value for my 1998 2.5 cdx is far far more than the probable £950-£1000 book price

When the oilcooler is done and the car is running good i am sure it will make you think that the price you paid is irrelevant.

Sounds like oil cooler.  Don't drive until sorted, that stuff does knacker just about everything, including rads :(

It will take lots and lots of flushing, daily, for about 3-4 weeks...
