Title: Rear bumper removal
Post by: amba on 21 October 2007, 09:19:28
Some s.... decided to run into the rear of my elite saloon last night in car park and has creased the chrome rear bumper trim and slightly turned up the black bumper .The painted panel skirt is fine. Can you remove the rear bumper and just replace those two parts or is it a total new rear section? If the sections can be replaced would it be wise buying a good second hand rear unit complete and salvaging the parts??also how do you remove and repace the bumper unit..is there a "how to "

Thanks vauxhallomega 1..that makes perfect sense and looks quite straight forward..am i correct in saying that you can remove just the bumper and chrome trim without removing the bottom painetd skirt ??if so as would seem to be what the guide is suggesting can you buy the bumper with chrome strips or are these usual GM lottery winners only and second hand is the way to go ?

The bottom painted skirt of the bumper is part of the bumper and cannot be removed Hence why they are so expensive.
You can replace the chrome trim in three sections they are seperate strips. How ever if the bottom part of the bumper is damaged then I would suggest replacing with a good secondhand one. Two reason's.....

1) It's much cheaper to replace secondhand than buying new. (this will result in hundreds of pounds to buy and spray)
2) If you are lucky enough you may just be able to find the right bumper in the right colour and in perfect condition.

Thanks Paul..

It is only the centre piece of the chrome trim that is dented and a very small crease in the black bumper just above number plate light.the painted skirt is un damaged so will look around for a decent rear bumper in parts or fleabay and take your guide as to removing and replacing.thanks again...andrew

I take it this removal process differs for facelift models?

If it's just the chrome trim that is dented then it may be worth while replacing the trim? The small dent above the number plate is nothing to worry about, just replace the trim. The part number is.........

Moulding, Rear Bumper Panel, RH, Chrome 90509528

Moulding, Rear, Bumper Panel, LH, Chrome 90509532

Moulding, Rear, Bumper Panel,Centre, Chrome 90509530

Thanks Paul for part numbers ..will ring local crooks in morning for a good laugh to start the week !!!on closer inspection it looks like a tow ball has gone plumb centre into rear bumper and has left perfect half circle in center chrome trim and bumper moulding..so think might be more than just chrome trim unless I can knock or push out dent in bumper moulding..will have a closer look in morning as just off to watch Brazilian GP.

I replaced my centre chrome/stainless trim shortly after buying my car about 4 years ago & IIRC it was about £20 then. Plastic bumpers sometimes respond to a bit of heat to 'bend them straight' if they're not to creased - hair dryer or boiling water.

Err? Can't remember :-[ but it was very obvious when it was all on my front lawn/patch of moss. I think it was the painted section that held it in place.

So do you have to remove the bumper first before you can replace the trim??
I was hoping it could be done in situ ::)

sound like it is quite complicated..looks like the chrome trims clip between the black bumper and the painted bit,so will require the whole thing to be taken off then

Yes to all. Except the complicated bit!  ;)

Yes, the bumper has to be taken off but it's not difficult. Then the chrome strip clips on with some tabs that have to be bent back. I remember also the painted part has to be removed first to access these tabs.
