Reading through various postings on here I think I may have a knock sensor problem.
The car ticks over normally. It can cruise all day at 120 kmp (legal speed limit here) However it continues to be really gutless on hills and also sounds tappety/tractorish when you try and accelerate.
I have done two paperclip tests in the last six months with no codes stored.
Yesterday I found a "cut wire". Forum members suggested it could be the remnants of a former crank sensor if so that was done in the two years before we got the car. The cut wire is located where the negative battery lead meets the engine at the cam cover and near the top hose engine end. When you pull it there is a metallic clunk suggesting something on the end!
I had a look today to see if I can see two knock sensors. The one on the ABS side is definitely present but the other I couldn't say for definite.
I thought maybe to disconnect each one in turn and see if the situation gets worse /stays the same. Also to see if any codes come up on a paperclip test.
Could it be something else like a cam sensor or crank sensor? It hasn't had either of those in the last 8 years.
Any ideas/suggestions please?

Paperclip test?

Did a paperclip test just a week ago. Nothing.
This is a long term problem we just live with.
is it possible for any of the various sensors not to be working and there be no codes?

first check the plugs..How are their condition..Their centres are white or plugs are covered black..This will give idea about the mixture of the combustion..
Whats the mileage..Did you changed lambdas before..or any of the sensors ?
And did you ever noticed misfire ? or stall at low rpms..

Cam covers changed last year, new plugs, new plug leads and new DIS Pack. The DIS pack cured a misfire. Plugs look fine.
Mileage is around 140,000. It doesn't stall at low revs. I cleaned the breathers and IAC last year. No I haven't had any sensors changed in the last 8 years of ownership.

from the things you tell I dont get any clue..Trial and error not a good idea..
But I can tell you my experience..
Crank sensor change ..hesitation solved
Throttle potentiometer change ...car become smoother
I changed lambdas (idle was bad). cured idle and performance considerably changed..
cam sensor change..car become much better..
cats and silencers can also effect ..(changed also)
one point to check can be compression test..
second somewhere in posts I see AR25 have a life of approx.120 K miles ..if yours is auto may be worth checking also by an expert..
