Title: Screech when starting 2.5td from cold
Post by: Turk on 28 October 2007, 18:42:02
I get a screeching noise that lasts for about 3 seconds, stops for a moment, then a second screech that lasts for slightly less than the first one.

It's not a belt type screech. Sounds more like a bearing or something metalic. It has a sound that reminds me of a fan or similar vaned item, so I'm thinking Turbo (..and I sure hope I'm wrong !!).

The sound comes from the left hand side when looking from the front of the car.  It started about two weeks ago and only does it when starting first thing in the morning or at the end of the day after it's been left for about 8hrs.

No problems with power loss etc.

...Wotissit ???

I started to get a screeching noise, sounds asthough something is dry (someone sold me a right nail ;D) and was convinced that it was the Aux Belt Tensioner. So I fitted a new one and still have the squeek only from cold. Squirted some WD40 on the belt and Crank Pulley and it stopped, so asked on here if there was a bearing behind there... but there doesn't seem to be...  Now the other day started the car up from cold and it was there again, squirted the Crank Pulley but it didn't stop, but when I squirted the alternator it did stop, so I am waiting until the next squeek and squirt the alternator again.....

Mine did that.  Screech from start, didn't matter whether it was cold or hot though.

Clutch on the A/C compressor disintegrated about 2 weeks later.  On it's way it took the fan and radiator, so worth a look.  Radiator's bloody expensive!

I've not got A/C now - too expensive to replace the compressor.  Not sure if you can remove anything temporarily to isolate it, someone else might know that though :)

It sounds like it's coming from further back than the pulleys at the front. That's what's making me think Turbo, cos from where it seems to be coming is from is about midway back and on the drivers side, but that was with me stood outside the car and starting the engine whilst leaning as far towards the engine bay as possible. I'll get someone to start the engine whilst I listen from a more sensible point.

If it's mice...what cheese should I use on the traps ??
