Are the gearchanges smooth or a bit jerky?
Any gearbox warning messages or EML ?
Does the gear selector light up correctly?

It sounds like the gearbox is working off its hydraulics only, without assistance from the ecu....could be worth checking that the electrical connector is properly fitted to the 'box.

But if it responds to Sports mode then ecu must be in control.....so get the codes read on Tech 2

You Don't mean that the selector goes 1 2 3 D N R P, and 4 is missing from that do you?  That is normal

Sorry If I am teaching to suck eggs here, just sometimes it is the simple things.

Tech 2 is a Vx gadget which plugs into a socket on the car and can talk to the various control units (engine, gearbox, abs, airbag etc) If the gearbox ecu (electronic control unit) has spotted a problem with the box it will have stored a fault code that Tech 2 can read.

Where are you?  Update your profile with location and car details. There are a couple of members who could read codes for you if local otherwise its probably a trip to Vx. (most independent garages can read engine codes but not gearbox)

If your having no luck mate, I would give the garage who fitted the box a ring, see what they say, or ring the guy you had the car off.

Hi, does it make three gear changes, watch the rev counter up to about 40mph to check that it does, if it does you have four gears.
p.s. welcome to the site

Marks_DTM_Calib in Nottingham has a Tech2, and will be much cheaper than a dealer to plug it in.  Drop him a PM :)

as a comparason 70 mph has my rev counter sat at just under 3000 rpm and 80 is about 3250rpm

if it does change into top it is normally done at between 45/50mph

These figures sound about right to me, the movement you can feel at 45-50mph is the box locking down to eliminate slip.

Unless you get decent software on the box, which eliminates that horrid 50mph lockup.

Hi TB, I have had my autobox software updated and I don't have a problem now with the lockup. However it sounds to me that jay w is getting the four gears, some people think that if it only changes three times you only have three gears, they forget that you start off in 1st plus three changes makes four. I'm not saying this is case in jay w's post, but it does happen. The rev range seems to indicate that the car is in 4th gear.
