Title: Oil cap smells of petrol
Post by: jimmygixxer on 03 November 2007, 09:38:30
Hi all
Just after a bit of advice, i have a 1999 2.0 estate, it isnt losing water and the oil level seems ok although it is burning a bit however when the car is started it smells quite fumey outside and there is a smell of petrol on the oil cap, does this mean anything or am i being paranoid???

we only need the car to get us through until January as we are getting a new car on mobiltity so i dont really want to have to spend a fortune on it if i can help it.

any advice will be much appreciated!!!

Any fault lights etc?

Does it only do short journeys?

What sort of MPG are you getting?

I suspect that if its only doing short journeys then there is a bit of bore wash on startup (rich mixture) which is resulting in a little petrol in the oil.

I would be doing an oil change and monitoring it at this stage, nothing more.

Whats the mileage?

Hi

No no fault lights, and yes it is only doing short journeys with the most being about 15 miles once a week, i havent really worked out the MPG although it does seem to be quite juicy, which i have always put down to the size of the car and the relatively low powered engine.
