Just had to call out Green Flag as my 2.5 V6 refused to start. Every thing seemed to be working except there was no spark at the plugs and the ECU light remained on while cranking, so I was fearing the worst. The recovery man tapped the crank sensor with the end of a piece of rod and the car started. Apparently the crank sensor has a plunger in it which can stick, and tapping it can free it. If you find yourself stranded as I did this seems well worth a try. He recommended changing the crank sensor when I got home.

Cobblers....the crank sensor is a solid state item and has no moving parts.
The failure is normaly due to a bad connection or failing wiring and hence why a tap cured it.

No it doesn't. Its a simple hall effect sensor, no moving parts.
Change it immediately, it WILL fail again. A lucky tap may not get you out of trouble next time.

Absolutely!
Welcome to the site :)
But do change that crank sensor asap.
Also worth doing the paperclip test as well :y

Many thanks, I'm intending to remove the crank sensor tomorrow - I'll try not to look too surprised if it doesn't have a plunger. Tapping it did, however, fix the problem, albeit temporarily it would appear. (Mind, when I discovered the cost of a new one I wouldn't have been surprised to find it had a solid gold plunger)

If you look in the 'Maintenence Guides' section, you'll see a better way of running it. Its the cable that gets knackered with age and heat (it runs along hot oil pipes).

Make sure you get the right one - there are two types!

Many thanks again, have now read the suggested posting. This site is considerably more useful than the Haynes manual

i once had a 3.0l elite with no spark
after spending about 4 days trying to get it going
i borrowed a snap on diagnostic scanner
from a mate.
the result was the crank sensor was dead
i could'nt be bothered to change it and broke the car for parts
as it was worth much more in parts at the time lol
i think ive taken more omegas apart than most
the worst thing has to be taking the heater matrix out though

Broke it over a crank sensor!? Jeeze, maybe I do spend too much on my cars ::).
