Horrible noise like stones in brake disc.
Seems to be centre wheel part of compressor??? fallen out of front and tangling with viscous fan. Belt is still on. Viscous is as stiff at 97 as when cold. ie not very, lacks that aero engine noise when revved hot.
I dont use aircon.
Ignore problem or any suggestions?

Assuming viscous is not damaged, must be compressor is. You need to replace the faulty part before it does more damage, or simply remove it.

your compressors knackered mate!!!

Must be the season for knackered compressors :-[

the wheely thing on the front of the compressor falls to the front & bangs off the fan, but most of the time it's quiet. I tried to pull it out but it looks like the rads fan & shroud have to go first.
No one needs aircon in ireland. & I seem to recall people trying to disable the viscous to keep the noise down. Runs 95ish 100 towig boat up short grade. Ignore or what?????

Don't ignore. Mine came apart, destroyed the fan and pierced the radiator. Expensive to replace the radiator. TD-Auto-withAirCon Rad is very pricey.

Can I just take the belt off. Is there anything else driven by it.
-
Remove belt (just the A/C one, not the waterpump/alternator/PAS one). Remove compressor completely (3 or 4 bolts depending on type).
-
That's what I wanted to hear. I might just leave compressor in situ.
Is it east to remove or should I just cut the belt.
-
I cut the belt & tywrapped the loose part. Fingers crossed.

Great result. now does 42 mpg.
