Title: fuel range
Post by: brett1408 on 10 November 2007, 12:39:04
does anyone know, on average, which should you believe, the range function on the on board computer or the fuel gauge, i've run out before with the obc reading 17 miles remaining! the problems with fuel consumption since my 3.0 elite was re-mapped have been unbelieveable! from the obc its averaging 16.3 miles to a gallon! and i can well believe thats true!  :-/

Personally, I go by the low level warning lamp on the dash and use the range indicator as a hopefull estimate, rather than fact.

Can't remember what the low level lamp comes on at, but would guess a little over a gallon - 5 litres??

ty! it could be an iffy sender, the light in the gauge comes on and the range starts flashing 31 miles but when its next started the light often goes off and the range reads 45 or something like that! and the average speed is always 17mph! now, i KNOW thats not right!!!  ;)

I find mine quite good to be honest. The lowest I have let my petrol get was 26 range and it was flashing, so stopped at the next garage ::)
I reckon every line on the fuel gauge is a tenna :y

Coward! ;D I've had my range down to 4 miles left, & I reckon that there was about a gollon or so left in the tank.

I put about £60 worth of petrol in the other night, the fuel light had been on for a couple of miles... on my way to pick up my Omega, I had a nice game of fuel light lotto, couple with bladder bingo... just as I passed the entry slip to the services, the fuel light came on.
Next sign - "services 42m". "Oh heck" says I. Turned all the electrics off, treat it with kid gloves, and tucked in behind a few heavies at 56mph to get as far as I could... found a slip off to some local services - got to the top of the slip and there were no signposts telling me which of the four exits to take. Lucky guess, and I swear as I went round a couple of roundabouts to get in, the car spluttered.
Splashed a tenner into the tank, hoofed around the corner, ran into Tescos, into the gents'... and had a dirty old bloke trying to sneak a peek. Ho hum.

Nothing to do you Omega's....
The other year we are driving to Cornwall towing the Caravan at about 12 o'clock at night with Mrs.Loo-knee's Range Rover.
Exeter services was mayhem so I said "we will get some petrol on the A30"
There was not a streetlight in sight, then the Petrol Light came on, we were driving along on fumes, sees a left hand turning down some country lane, about a mile on see a couple comin out of a Pub they told us there was a Petrol Station about 5 miles up the road :-? ::)
We got there I don't know how, someone must have been lookin over us... but i would have paid £5 per gallon that night ;D ;D ;D

I thought the light was supposed to come on when you had 50 miles left and flashes when you have 25 or less miles left. I don't know if that is worked out by your current computer trip average MPG or some factory setting.

Of course by the time you are down to flashing light no doubt the fuel pump is sucking rust and crud up to block your fuel filter!!

I've had the range on the MV6 down to 0, and still done another 18m (albeit at 56mph ;D)

Exactly what happens with mine 50 mile range, light on, gauge just slipping into red.

On my Omega's the "range" has read as low as 1 mile, but at the petrol station I have never been able to put more than 68 litres in the tank, ie still 7 litres left.  :)

I once got 72 litres in ... never again I hope  :( the last hours driving had been at 45 mph, the most gentle right foot ever invented, with much praying and hoping. The gauge was on 0, light flashing madly and the computer said 0 miles left ....

If the tank is truly 75 litres then I had about 1/2 a gallon (real money) left ..... not a nice feeling :(

This happened because of a blocked motorway ... I was diverted off by police and did not have a clue where I was going to get fuel from ... as I did not know the area and it was nearly midnight. I actually called the AA on the mobile to ask them where I could find fuel, the first place they directed me to was shut !!  :( so 40 miles later ...... phew   :)

The range is recalculated every 18 mile so the range figure is dependent on previous driving style, therefore it is possible for the range to increase even though you have less fuel in the tank

You're plainly not trying hard enough... ;)

I think the range readout on the computer works it out according to remaining fuel, against the mpg achieed over the last 10 miles?

I'm always running low.  I tend to run out of fuel in every vehicle I possess  :-[

My wife had had her Astra G for nearly a year before she knew it had an amber low fuel light, anywhere near the red and she'd fill it up ... just in case!  :-?

I have driven happily with 0 blinking. Having come from a poverty spec Audi 100 avant td that would scrape 100mls on the red section. But the same vaux ran out with 9 mls left on computer. 12pm middle nowhere. Plod eventually drove me to gas station cos of neighbouring unsavoury campers.
Dont believe mid.
Also it oppss your diesel pump.

When I came home last night.....the MID is flashing range 18miles......guage is near the end stop and the amber light is flashing too.....I havent got any LPG either.....ran out  :-[

But im confident it will make it this morning the 3 miles to fill up with LPG and then accross the road to the Shell garage to bung £20 of petrol in it......we shall see!

mine ran out with 30 miles left on the MID range, left high and very dry in a hospital car park. the wife never lets me forget it. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
