Title: VXs with flipout ignition keys?
Post by: GastronomicKleptomaniac on 28 October 2007, 16:43:53
After swapping the cars about earlier, I was quite taken with the idea of a key with flip-out function, as on new Golfs, my mum's Mazda, etc, etc...

I once saw a Mk2 Golf owner who'd transplanted the key into the mechanism for a Mk5. Obviously there was no immobiliser to worry about in that case... so - is there a VX car with a flipout key? If so... is it possible to swap the immobiliser chip as well as the metal key... or with soldering it to the new circuit destroy it?
(Since there was only one key with the car, I'm not so keen on my usual "suck it and see" approach... ;) )

I think most new models, vx are using the flip out type key now.

The immobliser chip is completely seperate from the remote circuit board so no soldering required.
Tho dunno if the inside of the old key would fit a new type one tho and carnt see how you could swap the blades over.

Be interesting tho if you could buy a 'blank' flip out key and with a TECH2 have it programmed for your Omega........TB would be the one to ask  :y

well when I enquired at Vx about a year or so ago about getting an extra key for an omega, I was told that it would be supplied as a flip-out type ...

Yeah, was behind some unfortunate chap who was buying one for his signum at the stealers once. Over 100 quid for the key, then get the vaseline out for a tech2 session :o

I think the key would be easy enough to cut (the dimensions/profile appear similar). Though the electrical systems on the new cars are completely different (canbus) so not sure whether the immobiliser system is the same??? Marko?

Hi, I have just bought a new key for my Omega, I got a quote from the local stealers first(D. Turpin & Co.!!) They wanted £143 including VAT and programming :o. Went to my local locksmith and they supplied it cut and programmed for £85 including VAT, a £58 difference is staggering and makes you wonder how the dealers sell anything.

Marks_DTM and I are much cheaper (though tend to use 2nd hand fobs), though you still need to get the key mechanically cut (£2 - £5 round our way)

Looking at this - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VAUXHALL-OPEL-3-FUNCTION-REMOTE-FLIP-KEY_W0QQitemZ300170572175QQihZ020QQcategoryZ10404QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem - the key blade seems to be far thinner than the Omega's MANLY-SIZED key blade. Chances of the mechanism fitting would IMHO be slim...

Now, I'd imagine that all keys are broadly similar, just fitted with a different badge. So, if we were to find a flip key with a fatter blade... a bit of fiddly wiring maybe to get the buttons working?
