Title: Manual gearbox/clutch problems
Post by: Badger on 12 November 2007, 19:25:35
Hi all. Got a bit of a wierd problem, hope someone can shed some light on this.
Car is 2.2 manual with 70 odd thousand miles. 80% of the time the car drives fine, nice smooth easy gearchanges, no problems. Occasionally I can't engage first or reverse, it goes in but only by forcing it, it seems as if the clutch isn't clearing properly. Did 40 miles yesterday no problem, today it has been a pig, baulking on several gearchanges but then seemingly o.k again. Don't want to start ripping the box out if it's something silly that regularly occurs on Omegas, my old Omega  did 158000 miles before it's clutch expired surely my clutch can't be goosed at this comparitively low mileage?

I just changed the clutch on mine, for the same reason.

And... about 1000 miles later, problem still exists, albeit a tad better.

My advice to you would be

A) Change the gearbox oil, using the correct oil from Vauxhall only. Do this a couple of times.

B) Reverse bleed the hydraulic clutch (can advise if needsbe).

It really spoils the driving experience, eh?

Is it worse from cold?

From cold, do you dip the clutch to select 2nd after pulling away in first, and feel a jerk?

Cheers James, I sympathise with you having done all that work and still have the same problem, that's why i was loathe to rip the box out and not find anything wrong.
Problem doesn't appear to be temperature related, this morning at 0.5 degrees gearbox stone cold she went into all gears no problem at all, drove to work perfectly then tried to park the car and she baulked at both first and reverse. On the way home she was a pig to get into gear on several occasions, when the car was cold and when it was warm.
From cold the car is pretty jerky anyway ( in fact it's horrible), the throttle response is just plain bad, it's very difficult to drive smoothly until it's got up to temperature, but the gear selection can be 100% fine some days despite the poor running, other days it can be just plain awkward.
I will change the box oil as advised and can reverse bleed the hydraulics, i have done this before on other vehicles.
 Thanks for the advice.
