Title: rad fan runs all the time whan my car is on
Post by: raximax on 08 November 2007, 23:52:57
would anyone know why my rad fan runs all the time when the car is switched on, even with aircon is off. the second fan comes on when you put on the aircon on i think its a relay but not sure which one. any ideas would be great....cheers :y

Which fan is running all the time? The one behind the radiator?

If it comes on with ignition I'd say it's likely to be the switch on the radiator. Just below the top radiator hose IIRC. See if it stops when you unplug this.

Could also be a stuck relay (in the trianglular plastic box near the battery) but the failure mode here would for it to be on all the time regardless of ignition on or off as far as I can see.

ok i just had another look . right looking at the car from the front the fan on the left in front of the rad stays on. when you put the heating on the one on the right comes on aswell.i cannot get the one on the engine side to come on i take it is for the aircon as mines dosent work. i took that plug out with no joy.

Ahh, OK. The front two are the aux. fans for the air con. The one behind the rad. is the engine cooling fan.

In that case, I'd say you've definately got a dodgy relay. I'll have a look later and see if I can tell which one.

Not wishing tobe disloyal but please try "Omega Fan Test (from catera owners)" it is on another site, go to "Yahoo Groups" then "Omega_Owners" then select "Files" and it is in there. As you may be aware the Omega was sold in the USA as the "Catera", based on the 3.0 MV6, they also have a owners site on Yahoo.
best regards

Appologies. Elite Pete had the same problem a while back IIRC. Blown fuse can be caused by a relay problem too as there are a couple of relays that switch the fans in series / parallel. If one of them sticks it will short under certain conditions.

The relays that may be at fault, as far as I can see, are K26, K52 and K28 in the engine bay fuse box. The layout of these relays can be seen here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1176560725

It might be worth just buying a complete set of relays from a car that's being broken so you can swap them until you find the fault?

Best Regards

Kevin

As Kevin said I had the same problem and MarkDTM swapped the relays that Kevin has just highlighted and its been grand ever since, touch wood  ;)

I would go to a scrapyard and get the relays out of an old Omega :y
