After 3 years of ownership and 25k miles later, a bulb has finally blown..... front drivers side dipped has gone.
Recomendations for a replacement? - Willing to pay a few extra quid to get decent ones and make sure the MID does not complain.
Is this time to upgrade to those Philps 50+ ??? - How much are they?
On the legal side i have one duff dipped headlight, i only drive at night at the moment, so if i drive with the front fogs on, would i get stopped? After all lights are there for you to be seen, and secondly for lighting your way .
-
legally fogs are only to be used in low visibilty conditions, and the defective headlight can get you stopped as well but you can usually talk your way out of that if it happens, i drove home with a bulb out but didnt get stopped, it went out as i was leaving the carpark at work, drove 15 miles down the motorway to get a new buld... on my way home
at the end of the day you still need to get home!

Don't drive with fogs on if it's not foggy mate, that's something that royally winds me up >:( ;D
I'd say you do risk being stopped. They probably wouldn't do anymore than tell you to change the bulb ASAP though....

The trouble is that its the drivers side thats gone..... passenger i could live with but drivers side makes a difference. Night crusing at 80 on unlit motorways could be a problem....
All my tools are at home, so can't do anything here :(

Never done a bulb on a facelift, but I seem to remember on the pre - it was just a case of pop the cover off and pop the bulb in, didn't need any tools?

Is it best getting the bulb from Vx?

Is it best getting the bulb from Vx?
Trade Club prices are approx half of normal retail price. That alone make me buy Vauxhall lamps.
(I plant bulbs in the garden!! ;))

I don't know specifically but I bought 2 of the combined dim/dip lamps for my lads Astra F today for £2.73 each + vat = £6.42 for the pair & I bought a dim lamp for my Astra recently for about £3.50

I can recommend the Philips +50s for mains - dipped beam, I don't know how much advantage they'd give. There are of course the new +80s, about £30 a pair - I'll be investing in a pair for my mains. :y

Drivers is easy enough without tools, bit fiddly, but no prob for gadget hands ;)
Change the bulb asap.
Also, do not touch the glass of the new bulb - it will knacker it. Sorry if teaching you to suck eggs.

Yes, the grease from skin causes premature failure when switched on. If you do touch it, you need to clean it off with something that will shift the grease...

Meths
Meths leaves a grease behind, if I recall correctly. Better with thinners or similar...

only BMW drivers are allowed to do that... ;)

The reason you are not meant to touch a halogen lamp is that the grease from your fingers is meant to cause a hot spot on the lamp glass as the lamp filament gets hot this causes the glass to melt at that point and so the lamp fails , I have never seen this happen though and have touched lamps loads of times on cars and also at work on ligjting . But saying that its always worth doing as they say :y I recently fitted the Halfords lamps to my car I can not recall the type but they were in a gold box and these seem to be much brighter althogh not cheap even with the trade card :( oh and if you are going to change for a different type of lamp do both headlights together :y FRONT FOG LIGHTS in good weather is also my pet hate even more so than center lane hoggers on motorways in fact you will see its usually someone sat in the center lane with there front fogs on >:( ;)

Fog lights on in clear conditions add 15bhp..and those are official "at the wheels" figures too !!
Ask little Billy Bell-End or any other baseball cap wearing, goldie looking chain bedecked chav in his Hot Hutch with the loud exhaust and even louder
"thumpety, thumpety" shite coming out of the "bangin" speakers.
...Tossers !!!

Doesn't stop them ending up on their roofs on the main road near us. Maybe listening to sh!te music and wearing a cap back to front has some sort of disorientating effect.

It's a well known fact that wearing a Baseball cap on backwards lowers the wearer's IQ by at least 50%

Hi, does anyone know if you can get the dipped beam lamps (H1) in the 80+?
