Title: V6 Cambelt torque settings
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 17 November 2007, 09:40:27
I'm doing this from memory - please can someone confirm I'm right with these:

Cambelt tensioner and idler bracket to engine: 40nm
Cambelt tensioner: 20nm
Top idler: 40nm
Bottom idler: 40nm
Water pump: 25nm

Correct?

I have my own way of doing it, but out of interest, what positions do you all find to be the best starting point, with the two adjustable idlers?

Cheers :)

"Yes, that's right" would have been a quicker answer  :P  ;D

But then I would have had to search for the correct settings, and I know you are as equally as good as me searching on here ;)

And you might have got the water pump torque value right.....8nm + 30 deg....or 12 with old bolts and loctite.

Just chuck the belt, tensioner and cover on and start it up, the few seconds it will take for you to realise its goosed wont make any odds with respect to needing the coolant circulating.

Harsh, but fair ;D

Maybe not, see general chat...

Compression wont increase any great amount thanks to adjusting the timing.....IF you have got away with it (it does not explain why it wouldn't run) I will be surprised...

Personal thoughts are mark, is that I've probs got away with it to the extent it runs, but I still think there will be some "impact" and effects as a result of the slippage. I recon a couple of valves have scraped, resulting in the compression difference (about 20psi)

I have a silly little thought on this ..... James said in a later post that he couldn't turn the engine by hand, later found to have still been in gear ....

I wonder if when he tried to start it, it was also still in gear .. as I can see no reason for ever putting in in gear after that point ..... and when he said it wouldn't "run" .. he actually mean't it wouldn't "crank"....  ?

If this is the case its probably damned "good luck" as it has actually stopped any further damage .... and might explain how he's "got away" with it ...

I'm probably way off here .. but as I ofetn say ... just my 2.7 p's worth (inc VAT)

:)

Another variation of the theme was from a work mate. Tighten till you fart  ..... then another quarter turn!!  ;)  ;)

"Tighten them til you feel it in your left/right knacker (according to handedness)"

Exactly why I have a number of helicoil kits now...in order to over come such approaches when I then have to fix the work done!  :y

I can only agree, I've come across a lot of bu66ered threads on modern cars, where much is ali. I'll have to have a chat with you, about which helicoil kits to get, it would be a good investment, I could talk nicely to santa :y

I guess I will be coming to visit you in a couple of weeks when the tractor blood needs changing again then.

Are you any good at welding ali ::)
