Title: Heater bypass valve
Post by: jorton on 19 November 2007, 22:28:31
Hi all, does anyone know out of the 3 pipes that come off the HBV, should the 2 pipes on the left that lead to the heater matrix, should you be able to flush water through both pipes (obviously one pipe at a time) and water come out of the other pipe.

IF i blow or put water thru bottom pipe water comes out of radiator drain plug but if i blow or put water thru the bottom pipe it feels blocked....TIA  :y

Not sure what flows where but bear in mind it is a valve....  Application of vacuum to the top will allow water to flow out the other outlet...

One or other of the two outlets will be blocked depending on the state of the valve. It diverts water either through the heater matrix and back into the engine or straight back into the engine depending on the vacuum input.

OK. What you say sounds right. One of the two outlets blocked, the other flowing freely. A good suck on the vacuum pipe and it should switch over to the other outlet, although you'll probably turn your head inside out trying!

 ;D ;D
just have a vision of lots of Omega owners trying this and getting their heads stuck  ;D

actually I think the OP is pouring water into the pipes, rather than the HBV.

I'm not sure what the problem is though?

ive already taken the HBV off and managed to break the vac pipe on top so will have to replace that anyway.

I tried pouring water into the top pipe but did'nt get much in as it appears to be blocked....

I even went into my local vauxhall dealer (don't ask me why i bothered, coz im not to sure) and asked them if both pipes should be clear, i mentioned the HBV to the bloke only to be to "Not to sure what you mean by a HBV but if you mean that black thingy with the pies"

My response "Do you mean the Heater Bypass Valve" ????

Sorry in advance to anyone who works for a vauxhall dealership....but OH MY GOD do any of them know what they are on about ????? :-?

Going a bit off topic here, but when I went into my local dealer and asked about some anti freeze, the parts man asked the service man and he said I needed 3L enough for a fift/fifty mix ie 6L total capacity!
The service man even asked me "Is it a full flush?" Got home to find it's 9.7L (well according to Haynes anyway!)

So you're right, they don't know!
