Title: Heavy Steering
Post by: dbug on 19 November 2007, 23:19:24
1998 Elite 2.5V6 Estate Auto.
Further to my recent post re dodgy ABS ECU, http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1194380670/10#0      , have noticed that whilst ABS & TC lights on and no speedo, steering appears heavier than normal.  When warning lights go off & speedo working, steering seems to return to normal.
Is this coincidental, or a function of the dodgy ECU?
Aux belt OK, power steering fluid level ok, power steering pump quiet.
Will be swapping ECU later this week so hopefully will sort out steering - or do u know otherwise????

Those are EXACTLY the symptoms I had when my ABS ECU failed. BBA Reman repaired it and since refitting in August I've had no problems ... didn't need re-programming either as it was the original part :)

Including heavy steering?
Have 2nd hand ECU off same model, engine size & year to fit so shouldn't need reprogging.

Yup .. its my understanding that the speed signal the steering needs to change the "assist" level comes from the ABS sensors, via the ABS ECU .. probably wrong but that was the info I was given when mine failed..  :(

Yes, all 6 cylinder Omegas have speed sensitive steering, that relies on the speed signal from ABS for proper operation.

i wouldn't take that for granted, you could still find that it will need a session on Tech2

As a minimum, it needs to have the same (or superceeded) Ident code (2 letter code)

Why? All 6 cylinder Omegas have it. And 2.0/2.2 aren't proper Omegas so don't count :P

Our DTi Elite has it, light as a feather for parking. CD does not. I would suspect CDX DTi doesn't have it either?
