ABS ECU fubar'd :( Well documented for your(our :-/) year of car.

I would second that. Fiddly job. Do a search on ABS ECU in general forum. There is also a comprehensive guide in the maintenance section.
Other symptons are no cruise control and sometimes heavy steering.
Can you put some details of car in your profile please? It helps with answers to questions.
If you decide to change it I have some photos of tools that are useful and the unit when it comes off which I could Email you.

Have exactly same problem with a 1998 2.5V6 Elite Estate auto - see the following post for info - http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1195514364
Hope this is of help.

Yep, replace/repair ABS ECU about £125 for a recon unit.
-
abs failure, fairly common on post 98 models.
-
Its that common that I keep asking for a broken ECU to disect and to date......I have not got one.

i think most peeps are using a refurbishment place... :'(

Given the cost of re-furb, the failure can be little more than a dry joint or faulty relay.....cant be to hard to repair and would make a great maintenance guide.

My thoughts exactly...
I know on a members P reg (so before the troublesome type), I bodged a failing abs by tapping the relays...
