i've just rang a local garage for a quote to do my rocker gaskets and the guy i spoke to reckons it's a 4 1/2 hour job.
i told him i've already brought the gaskets,o-rings and some black sealant from the dealers, he said it would cost £185 to fit :o aswell as cleaning the breathers out.
he also said that i'd need to buy new rocker covers aswell as they warp and it'll just start leaking again if the old ones go back on.
it only leaks from the back end on the left side(not a lot) so i don't think they are warped.
does this price sound about right? or is the guy full of it just to screw more money out of me :(
i'd do it myself but never done a v6 before.
oh and do i need a torque wrench to tighten the bolts and what's the setting for the cam cover bolts?
thanks
Dave

Hi Dave
If you want to drive up to mine I will give you a hand and ive got all the tools required :y
-
use a different mechanic. If he thinks the cam covers warp, he's misinformed. If he's had personal experience of them warping, he is incompetitent.
-
that's very decent of you mate, thanks :)
timbuk said he'd help me when i had the car off him but i think he's flat out busy with moving house and work.
how long will it take do you think? i'll be at the meet on sunday so we can sort when we can do it :y

I cant imagine where you would get 4 and a half hours from...unbolt a few bits, unclip a few sensors, 30 mins to an hour and you have it all undone...even if your me and I'm not the fastest yet at doing this...replace gaskets, clean breathers etc 30 minutes?? Put it all back together, 30 mins...2-2.5 hours I would say, for a trained mechanic probably less in reality.
Make sure you report back how long it actually took ok? :)
-
so not that difficult then? i had a feeling he was telling me porkeys, robbing barstool >:(
the gasket set cost me enough, £61 total.

Cam covers only warp if there over tightned and 4 1/2 hours is execessive to say the least. I suspect he priced it high because he did'nt want the job. :o

iirc it was 8Nm but cant remember, mine covers were perfectly good appart from the encrusted oil deposits, took me all of 20 mins to clean the pair.

Realy, it takes ME 2 hours to do it properly on the V6
-
Takes me about 2hrs per side, so could probably do both in 3hrs. But then I haven't done as many, nor do I have the talents of Mr DTM :-[
-
Realistically it would only take an extra 10 minutes doing both sides to just doing one as its the disassembling and assembling of the engine that takes most of the time??
-
Buy a Halfords tool set (the £150 one which is reduced to £100). Then do it yourself, it's really easy just take your time and follow Mark DTM's how2
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152564281
Then next time you need to do something you'll have the tools to do it.
Try it :y
