My estate gets around 30 mpg doing short journeys, say 5 mile distance stop/start in traffic.
On longer journeys expect over 40+mpg depending on how you drive of course.
Mine is a manual though, the auto box versions of the TD don't mate well with the BMW engines, so I've read about on here.
Someone else more knowledgeble can comment on that one though.

Very low I'm afraid. Diesels only come into their own when cruising, and the auto box around town kills MPG.

I wouldn't like to say a figure, but I currently get around 35mpg on a 25m commute each way, mostly constant 40ish mph.  At 80mph, I average high 40s.  I would suspect just town driving, low 20s?

I have never acheived over 34 mpg (& that was on a long run) so would be delighted to know how figures in the high 40's can be obtained

Yeah, mines chipped, that helps.  If you have an AR25, you can't really chip yours - Omegatoy is the person to speak to about chipping.

The torque when chipped makes up for that though.  :y

It's an AR25, that appears to have been 'looked at' at 30K miles
I have a receipt that states 'reseal', why that should have been required at such a low mileage is a mystery
It's now done 132K & has never given any problems save the time I filled the selector switch with water in the infamous 'drowning incident'
If it ever fails, I would replace with an AR35 then consider chipping
Is there no other way of improving MPG?

Don't think the MAF makes much difference - just a more accurate way of measuring air rather than the simple temp method used on non MAF ones...
