Title: Automatic gearbox specialist/garage! Help!
Post by: mkaminski100 on 28 November 2007, 14:58:40
My gearbox is going from bad to worse, it's getting hot and I have to fix it ASAP.
I am looking for an autobox specialist/garage. I am located in Reading (RG2) but can go in ca 100 miles radius if the garage offers good quality (and reasonable price). I need a garage that can fix my gearbox and will not start from full recondition. I spoken with one and was told about max price and that it might drop if some parts will look OK. Unfortunatelly I dont know anything about this company.
Can you please advise me where is any good and recommended autobox specialist.

Allen's Garage in Tadley (RG26... on the A340 through the town) used to be an excellent gearbox specialist, doing a great deal of work on auto boxes specifically. I don't know if they're still as focused on boxes since i moved north, but they're definitely worth a try!

Allens garage in Tadley - the man you want to talk to is Gareth
He used to have a TD Estate himself & knows Omegas inside out
It was he who rescued mine when I filled the engine with water in the July floods
The location is on the corner of the A340 (Mulfords Hill)  Fairlawn Rd
Post Code RG26 3NY or thereabouts
Talk to him & see if he can help you

Pitchfork - Tadley eh? Lived there for 21 years before heading off to make my 'fortune' in the north. Parents still there and will be back for Xmas. Will see if your band's playing while I'm there [smiley=beer.gif]

Mkaminski - sorry, that's all I've got. I'd have said ask Allen's to make you a recommendation but it sounds like they already have. Steve used to be the man for boxes, but he left a few years ago now I gather. Hope you get somewhere.

Well, thank you for that, I am happy is anyone will try to help me. It's not a problem if he's not doing it anymore...
I've called them and after short conversation was told that they've dropped autoboxes, and gave me a Bill Knights number. He told me that it will cost 1100+VAT and by now it's the most expensive guy.
I found these guys, quite far but they take 950 +VAT for full recondition, and I can just fix it as well. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Gearbox-Repairs-Reconditioning-service-All-Makes_W0QQitemZ320187886172QQihZ011QQcategoryZ9889QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem have you heard about them?

Actually currently living in Basingstoke (although right now I'm in Chicago) while my house is being underpinned
Nearest place we'll be playing over Xmas period is in Reading on NYE

On subject of gearboxes, if you were to locate a SH one, Gareth at Allens would be a good man to fit it for you

I have called them last week. 1100 Pounds + VAT. Not the highest price (was 1200+VAT) but they can only do the reconditioning and I want to fix it.
Tomorrow I am going to Sassanach. I hope that it's nothing major to be fixed....hopefully
Thanks guys.  :)

Sassanach has striped the gearbox apart a and he didnt found anything suspicious. Everything line new, apart from pump which wasn't producing suficient pressure. So he changed the pump and it all looked fine but I had same problem again yesturday.
I will try to contact him again today but I susspect that it might be a valve/solenoid problem. It's not a big problem to pay for it but I'm not 100% sure and it is said that they tend to fail mechanically, but not electrically (only when very hot), and it hard to find out which failed.
Does anyone has any manual about these gearboxes? It would be very helpfull as I found a person in Poland which knows more about this solenoids.

ive already totally dissassembled this box and found a slight amount of excess slop in the third gear clutch pack, and replaced the pump which boosted the oil pressure back to spec, and for a while i thought id cracked it,but it was not to be.im now going in to the solenoids/valve body as im totally convinced that the box is mechanically sound.
