Title: 2.2 auto box problem

my mate has just come down the motorway. then the gearbox went into first gear and wont budge from there, at the same time the car with a spanner light came on ( manual suggests its an electronic problem) its a y plate vectra.
 it doesn't matter which gear you select even neutral you get first gear.. even reverse is first gear forward... is the box scrap ?? or is it something else???? thanks

I am no expert but worth checking all is as it should be with the selector switch (quite vulnerable on the side of the box).  Others more knowledgable will be along shortly (or maybe not as its a Vectra ;))

cheers mate, but the vectra is transverse engine... but the selector cable could be a good start to look.... but it seems to lock in park thats the only strange thing... any other areas to check would be welcome befor i rught the gearbox off..
