Hi all
My omega is on an L plate 94 and it has the 2-0L Eco tek engine.
The car has been losing coolant now for quite a while, not all the time usually it tends to dump coolant after top up. I located where it was leaking it was coming out of the expansion tank filler cap. OK new cap i thought tried new cap gave it a test run not leeking from filler cap now but it's leeking from a pinhole very near to where the top hose fits and now I'm worried because both top and bottom hose seem to be hard as if there is too much pressure in the cooling system. There is no oil in the expansion tank and no water in the oil and no white smoke from exhaust anyone any ideas please??????????
Regards Julian.

Fix the leak before starting worrying about HG. External coolant loss will cause more pressure in the cooling system, since the liquid is replaced by gas.

does the 2.0 have a heater bypass valve as on the V6??
if so i would change this first as this will produce the symptoms you are getting.
sorry im not familiar with the 2.0 ecotech engine bay.

Yes the 2.0ltr does have a HBV but this would not cause the problems. As stated at the top of the post he has a small pin hole in the expantion tank. What you need to do is replace the expantion tank and then refill the cooling system. This should stop your problem but remember to replace the tank first before anything else.

Agree, fix the known issue and see if symptoms persist.
HBV on 4 pot but no oil cooler...

Hi All
Just an update really. Today i bodged the radiator with some filler ( I intend to replace A.S.A.P.) and to my surprise car seems back to normal no excess pressure in top or bottom hoses and the new cap on the expansion tank has stoped it throwing water out on engine shut down must admit i'm surprised that a small radiator leak would cause over pressureisation (bet i spelt that wrong) of the cooling system. Oh well we live and learn.
Many many thanks for your responses.
Regards Julian.

The overheating is caused by the fact that you have NO pressure in the system. The system pressurises and stops the coolant from boiling. Thus if you have no pressure you boil up the coolant.

Hi
This is an old thread of mine just to carry it on and update.
Eventually a couple of weeks ago i managed to get hold of a second hand radiator fitted it and car was ok for a while. Looked at it today and the radiator is leeking again from what looks like a small pin hole where the top hose fits. (Exactly like the previous Rad)
Should i try and locate another radiator or am i missing something here
Anyone Please.
Regards Julian.

Where did you get the rad from mate, if from a scrapper did you take the rad off yourself,? if you did , did you cut the old top hose off or pull/wiggle the hose off.? I was told a long time ago to always cut the hose off a used rad as after a period of years the joint at that point CAN, become weak and if you pull the hose then y
you can make it weak and eventually leak.
best to get a new rad . :y

Is it still overpressurising? (rock hard hoses)
-
Hi
Yes its the plastic bit. Didn't remove rad. myself it was allready off and yes both top and bottom hoses are both pressurized again but isn't this because it's leaking again.
I was wondering if this would repair with a high temperature epoxy resin, Iv'e also thought about rad weld or something similar but Iv'e heard a lot off bad reports about these products.
Cheers Julian.

Not radweld, yet to see these things work entirely as promised.

Hi All
Went down to local car spares he reccomended a product called rad seal anyway I bought some added it and hey presto leak cured no pressure in hoses fan cutting in and going off on the button.
Lets hope i'm not going to regret this. Thanks for all the help and I'll keep you posted.
Cheers Julian.

Hi Just an update really. Since my last post radiator developed another leak, which i sealed using a special epoxy type sealant designed for rads and expansion tanks. Meega was ok for about 4weeks, then today it blew off the top hose. I fastened it back refilled coolant system but when i checked the car when i got home top and bottom hose were solid (I could sqeeze them but with a lot of effort) Unscrewed expansion tank top a little to relieve pressure, hoses went soft and pressure didn't rebuild at least while the car was ticking over.
Anyone any ideas.
Regards Julian.

One simple thing you can do is to check your spark plugs. If one or two of them has discolouration (most likely to be cyl#4) this can be an indication of coolant entering the combustion chamber.
