Title: Towbar, which one?
Post by: Humpy on 13 December 2007, 00:07:33
Anybody recommend a good towbar? Are the Witter ones easy to fit? They're probably the best if a little dear, seen one on Ebay for just a smidge under a ton which is cheaper than anywhere else! Thanks all.

Depends what you want to pay. I'd always go for the Bosal swan neck which is OE and are IMHO far superior (& dearer) to the Witter type. The main strength of the Bosal sits inside the boot floor using a big plate, rather than the ugly 2" box section that bolts up to the exterior of the boot floor of the Witter. One other small advantage of the swan neck is that if your caravan (assuming that what you want the tow bar for) has an Al-ko stabiliser fitted, it will go straight on rather than having to use the Al-ko specific bolted flanged ball. It's a few years bback now but I paid not much more than a ton for my Bosal.

I've got a removable Westfalia one (albeit on a saloon) and it's great. Easy to fit and remove and no evidence of it being there when not in use.

Edited to say: Fitted myself. Took an afternoon to do.

I'd agree, I've got one of these and the support when fitting is superb. When I had a problem, I just phoned them up on a Saturday afternoon and they talked me through the whole procedure. It was just like having the bloke stood next to me as I was doing it.

I phoned to see what they had in the way of a plate to fix my 12S socket to. They sent me one free of charge! Can't do better than that!

I have a Witter tow bar - solid and dependable. :y

In hindsight I would have fitted a removable one - just depends on cost.  :-/

Please remember that all towbars fitted to vehicles of "S" reg or newer MUST be "type approved" .. please don't fit "cheap & cheerfuls" they only lead to trouble .. :(
