just had the two intermediate pipes and rear box (2.2 petrol estate)replaced at budjet (ouch 300 spondoolies)
while on ramps they commented on illegal rear tyres !!!! before telling me that the cat was faulty.
they showed me where the metal brading had corroded and it was now loose.they told me this was another 400 quid, i said forget it cos no money like everyone else.they said ok its not blowing yet but it could after they have put new sections on.i now think its making noise will check this weekend.
If I have been told correctly the brading is a flexable joint so my question is can it be braised up or could i use a special heat resistant silicon (hylomer i think , i used it on tvr exhaust manifolds)
which could be applied without taking exhaust off.
the car is not telling me there is a problem so is it worth doing the above or should I try and find price of new front end if i can get one cheaper than 400 i will do this.
hope this isnt too much to ask for

Others will be along to advise but I am pretty sure this is fixable without resort to new cats.
Do 2.2's have twin intermediate pipes? I'm sure my 2.0 had just the one.

if I understand the subject correct, it can be welded and repaired..So you can spend your money for more important things..

that good news i will have to remove front section will this be an easy task while car on drive or do i have to use a ramp.

You cna get new aftermarket flexi sections which can be welded in.....that was a pricey exhaust!

can you provide me with more info on the flexible joint this sounds interesting
ps how much should I have paid because it was over 400 for just the bits from vauxhall

Well lets just say that if you join say....autobahnstormers at 20 quid per year (it might 15 actualy), you get trade club prices which bring the cost down a lot.
For the flexi joint.....you just need to find out the size!

flexi fitted to mine just before I bought it cost of iirc £80 all in
twin intermediate pipes and tail fitted by local tyre factor for £240 - not as quiet as vax original and certainly wont last as long

Befor I got my ellie we ran a Daewoo :( I know, and we had an exhaust problem and it was megga bucks and main dealer. Found Rochdale exhausts took car over and he made an exhaust useing parts of my exhaust and new bits including a new flexi bit there and then 60 quid and an hours wait drove home without earpluggs.
Its one of those old establishments they knew there stuff, told several people and the are all pleased and they all said it was 60 quid
