Noticed this morning when went to work it took over 10mins and 15 miles at steady 50 before temperature gauge reached 90.heater did put out warm air but after about another 10 mins temp gauge reached mid way and heater then ran hot.
The same happened tonight although outside temp down to -1.5..still took quite a while to reached heat from heater.Would this improve with a coolant flush or does this sound like themostat is starting to stick ??as have read that they are a pig to replace with a difficult bolt access and dont fancy working on the car this close to christmas on driveway in these temps

Looks like i have same prob too!
I did my cambelt and water pump a month ago and did flush out the water system with a hose for 1/2 hour of so. I still have the problem so i guess that wasn't good enough.
Would be keep to know what other think...

My temp gauge never really got off the mark until I hit the M42, that was after 25 mins drive.
Done 230 miles today it only ever got to 70 max and then kept dropping down again gradually.
Everything works fine aircon, heater no problem.
BTW ....2.5 TD

Will do a total coolant flush in the next day or so and see how it goes..must be just very cold and old girl doesn,t like the weather either, but she is quite old (9.5)also looks like thermostat is not a nice job on the V6 .

All these sound like the stat is stuck open. The effect is more exaggerated in cold weather - you've got freezing cold air hitting the rad (especially at Mway speeds) and causing the system to take even longer than normal to warm up.

my thought aswell ians..am going to do a total coolant flush when it gets a bit warmer than it is today.(blowing a hooligan and chill is about -5 at moment so dont know what it must be like further north ???) and hope that improves it,The temp does go up and car does warm up nicely it is just a bit slower than it used to be.Looks like a thermostat change is a pain so would like any guidance on work involved if anyone can advise,if that is the course i need to take.

You definitely have a thermostat problem. Mine was the same until a new one fitted, now comes up to temperature within a couple of miles

Pitchfork..my fears seem to be confirmed. How easy/difficult is it to replce thermostat or is it garage job ?then any idea of £££,s it may cost

I'm afraid I don't know because it was replaced at the same time as I had other things done to it by my tame mechanic
I'm sure that 'The Boy' will advise as he has such a loving relationship with the BMW engine that he dreams of it a night! ;)
